This ride is based on the tale of Y Ddraig Goch (The Red Dragon), the national symbol for Wales.
In the Mabinogion, The Red Dragon fights with an invading White Dragon. His pained shrieks cause women to miscarry, animals to perish and plants to become barren. Lludd, king of Britain, goes to his wise brother Llefelys in France. Llefelys tells him to dig a pit in the centre of Britain, fill it with mead, and cover it with cloth. Lludd does this, and the dragons drink the mead and fall asleep. Lludd imprisons them, still wrapped in their cloth, in Dinas Emrys in Snowdonia.
The dragons remain at Dinas Emrys for centuries until King Vortigern tries to build a castle there. Every night the castle walls and foundations are demolished by unseen forces. Vortigern consults his advisers, who tell him to find a boy with no natural father, and sacrifice him. Vortigern finds such a boy, Merlin, who is supposed to be the wisest wizard to ever live. On hearing that he is to be put to death to solve the demolishing of the walls, the boy dismisses the knowledge of the advisors. The boy tells the king of the two dragons. Vortigern excavates the hill, freeing the dragons. They continue their fight and the red dragon finally defeats the white dragon.
Ride Design
The love child of Diamondback, Intimidator and Apollo's Chariot, with a sprinkle of Silver Star, this ride combines the best of the B&M hypers, minus any trimming. At a colossal 6321ft, this ride would dominate the industry, and be the longest B&M ever made.
The idea of the theme came from looking at Patriot at World's Of Adventure. This is the welsh version of that! The landscape is based on beautiful lakes of Snowdonia, where the dragon was buried in the legend.
I really liked this coaster alot. As stated below I thought that the themeing was perfect. All the G's where perfect aswell. I liked the layout and I think your one of the best on this site.
Wow, I rarely drop a rate but I was blown away by this ride!
I would have liked just a little variation in the airtime of the big hills (being all perfect 0.0 in the middle row), say, the last one could've pulled like -0.2 as a surprise boost, or perhaps some stronger positives in one valley or so. (that's -0.25 adrenaline. But it was very, very realistic, just felt so B&M (including the transitions) yet offering great surprises! The layout was perfect: The majestic hills seemed much more powerful as they were connected by intelligent twists. Then, the turnaround into the tunnel - probably the best feeling element I've seen on ANY NL ride! The second helix with the greeeat tightening up at the top felt flawless too, as did the bunny hills - realistic ejector air there, and a good adrenaline increase from the floater big ones. And what a finale, hidden behind the stone wall, pushing the limits of what a B&M would do as far as quick g-forces go - a climatic rush up until the airtime hop into the brakes! Just wow!
The theming adds a LOT to the coaster, too, it's not too much, but very beautifully and atmospherically done. Well overall, this is the the best NL B&M hyper I've seen, and if it was real, it would be by far the best out there! Thanks for this great ride.
Well, if this is what you had problems with then I agree with you that this is fun. I would not say it is intense because I like ejector air much more (just an opinion) but it definitely does not lack adrenaline. It was very realistic forces over the hill. People are just morons. (Not talking about anyone here. Even though some people here are morons [;)])
This was a very well made coaster. I loved how good the pacing was. I also liked that you didn't go overboard with the theming and stuck to making a great and realistic ride.
I think over 9/10 is a very generous score! Thanks for the rate! I just think there's other areas you could've picked up "newton newbie-ism" haha! As the multiple banking changes were completely intentional.
Watch a POV of Apollo's Chariot, after the second hill the banking is about 20* as it steers from the river, then banks suddenly into the helix.
It's one of those B&M transitions that's oh so wrong but oh so right, I really love them, so I made a point of putting it into this ride. It's also a multi-zone!
Alton, many B&Ms have the feature you described as being wrong after the MCBR. I'm glad he noticed that detail and decided to include it in his design both there and entering the other helix, if I remember correctly.
The main thing I want to congratulate you on is your attention to detail, If you take this level of detail forward to every subsequent ride you design you are going to get an excellent portfolio. Most people decide what type of ride they want to build and start off well but then technically they get more relaxed and things start to fall apart but you have kept to your initial characteristics throughout the ride which I think is very important.
T: The only 'issues' that the track had was the drop and the post-mcbr drop. The first drop was just shaped incorrectly. I have made several B&M megas and each time I use a different method to make the drop and they never seem to be shaped correctly. Yours not only looks wrong in the editor, it also feels wrong in the sim. It feels like the top half of the drop is made of two segments or something. Its hard to explain, I saw that Vid_w was trying to explain in your thread.
The drop after the mcbr looks like you've used two single zone force segments when you should have used a multi zone force segment to get a more gradual banking change into the left turn; because at the moment you have a roll of about 20 degrees, followed by another roll which increases the banking into the helix. Its just little things like that which make you seem less of a newton2 newbie.
Final thing I want to say in technical is that you added supports on the lift and mcbr which stick out to the left as if they should be supporting some netting or maybe an escape car. Perhaps you should have added the netting?
Supports were very good.
Hill shaping was very good.
A: There should have been somewhere where it reached 4G! In my sim it reaches 3.8G, which is not quite strong enough, you should reach 4G once, or twice. I like the way you stuck with the G force over the hills of -0.3/-0.4 minimum. Even though its not that exciting its very realistic.
This B&M mega was a very realistic mega in terms of pacing and overall feel to the ride but it was longer and more fun. I can't help thinking that maybe the mcbr should have been placed slightly later?
O: Two different types of helices, two different hammerheads and varying airtime hills and an interesting T shaped layout. That's original enough for me.
Congrats on the best B&M Mega i've probably ever seen online!
