2012 CoasterDraft
The coasterdraft is a game where players try to combine rollercoasters all over the world into a single park. The players take turns and every coaster can only be picked once. After several rounds, a vote or poll will determine who has created the best park.
Sounds like fun?
Please the full rules below first. The game can last for a pretty long time, and you'll need to check in at least once every 24 hours for the duration of the game. This is the absolute minimum, so please only sign up if you have enough time.
The rules
The rules have changed a little bit since last year, with the aim to speed up the picking process, so that the game can be finished in weeks instead of months.
The picking order
Before the actual start of the draft, the players will be arranged and grouped. When signing up, players have to pick a lucky number between and including 0 and 100. When the sign up deadline is closed, a random number will be drawn and the distance between the picked number and lucky number of the player will determine the position of the players. The player who was closest will be on top.
The groups
Before each round, the players will be grouped in groups of 4. Players 1-4 will form group 1, 5-8 form group 2 and so on. Depending on the number of players, the last group could contain less than 4 players.
This a new rule added to speed up the draft, and it might be difficult to understand, so please read it carefully:
Once the round is started by the game leader, the first group has 24 hours to make their picks. The picking will NOT BE first-come-first-serve. The 1st player has the highest priority, and the 4th the lowest priority.
The 1st player will always get the coaster that he picks, even if he is the last player to pick a coaster.
The other players will have to post mulitple picks. The number of picks depends on the priority of the player. The player must make so many picks, that he will still receive a coaster if the other players with a higher priority take away his other picks.
This means that if the 4th player wants to post his picks first, he will have to post 4 picks, since there are 3 players with a higher priority that still have to pick. If none of the other players take any of his track, he will receive the first coaster he picked.
The 3rd player must post 3 picks if he first to pick.
The 2nd player only has to post 2 picks.
To summarize: During a 24 hour turn, 4 players can pick anytime they want. But, depending on their priority, they have to
post additional back-ups, in case a player with a higher priotiy takes away his prefered coaster.
This might seems complicated, but it's easy to understand with an example.
EXAMPLE:
1 Player A
2 Player B
3 Player C
4 Player D
The turn starts somewhere during the night.
C wakes up first. Since he is the first to pick, he needs his preferred pick and two back-ups
C picks: Thunderhead, Nemesis and Skyrush.
Then B wakes up and picks: Nemesis and Katun
D checks in and posts: Skyrush, El Toro, Kingda Ka and Maverik.
Finally A wakes up and picks: Thunderhead.
Now that all players have made their picks (and back-ups) the tracks will be divided.
A will get Thunderhead because he has the highest priority.
B will get Nemesis.
C will get Skyrush because A and B took his preffered pick and 1st back-up pick.
D will get El Toro because C took his preferred pick.
If the 24 hours are over, the turn will end. Players that failed to place a valid pick will not receive a coaster. If all players pick before the 24 hours are over, the turn will end and the turn for the next 4 players will start immediately. The next deadline is 24 hours after the post timestamp from the last player in the previous turn.
Once all the turns of a round are over the 1st person of each group is placed last in the group and the others move up one spot. Then the top group is moved to the back of the list and all the other groups move up a spot. In case the 2nd to last group has now less than 4 players, players from the last group will be moved to that group.
Once again, I understand that this might be a little difficult to comprehend, and you'll have reveal a little bit of your strategy sometimes, but it will save massive amounts of time. If you have any questions about this system, please ask them and make sure you got it before the game starts.
Picking coasters
Once it is your group's turn, you can pick your coaster(s).
You cannot pick a coaster that has already been picked.
You must include the park name if there are other coasters with the same name.
You must not edit the post in which you make your pick UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.
If you forgot something, make a typo or forgot to include the park name, MAKE A NEW POST!
You can only pick coasters that are operating at that time. RCDB will the main reference, unless clear evidence is provided by you or another player.
Coasters that are not operating because of routine maintenance, seasonal park closing or short-term technical problems can be picked.
Coasters that are down because of technical problems without any chance of reopening soon cannot be picked.
Coasters that have soft-opened can be picked (include photo's or TR's to back up your claim).
Coasters that have only opened for press, media or photoshoot/video recordings cannot be picked.
If a coaster closes or gets destroyed by terrorists the pick will remain valid throughout the game.
Dueling/Racing coasters come as a package, they cannot be picked separately.
Missing turns
If you fail to post a valid pick, you will miss that turn. An invalid pick is:
- You have not picked a coaster at all
- You posted to few coasters and higher priority players took all your other picks
- You picked a coaster that is closed.
- You have edited your post.
If your pick in invalid you have until the deadline or until the other players have made valid picks, whichever comes first.
If you miss the first round you will be disqualified.
If you miss two rounds in a row you will be disqualified.
If you miss three rounds in total, you will disqualified.
The coasters of disqualified players will NOT become available for other players.
Skipping turns
If you know you will be unable to make your next pick, you can skip that turn. You must state clearly that you wish the skip a round before the deadline of that turn. After you skipped a turn, you may choose another coaster in your next turn. The maximum of skipped turns is 2.
End of the draft
When all the rounds are over, the players will think up a name for their park and vote which of the other parks are the best. Details will follow when the draft ends.
To summarize:
- Sign up only if you have enough time and can acces this site once every 24 hours.
- You have until Sunday 15 July 11:59 PM to sign up and post your lucky number.
- Make sure you understand the new '4 at a time' picking and ask if your don't.
ADDITION 1 (july 8)
I'm going to limit the playing field to 24 players, otherwise there won't be any good coasters left for those who are last to pick.
Everybody can still sign up, but only 24 players will be allowed to play.
This means that the 24 players with the closest distance to the lucky number will start the game, the other members who signed up will be placed on a back-up list, to take over in case a player drops out. (Upon joining, the back-up player will get a chance to fill in the missed turns of the quitting player.).
