does a ride need a brand new layout to be origional? it seems that in real life, if you theme a ride amazingly, its origional.. example: which is more origional, exterminator at kennywood or crazy mouse on dinosaur beach? i think most people would say exterminator because of the theming and its surroundings despite the fact that the layout is origional. how come if on no limits, you take a layout that's been used elsewhere and use it in an origional way, you get crap ratings because the layout's been used before? i'm sure if you built an indoor SLC it would be known as quite origional- but on nl if you dont come up with a brand new layout every time it seems you'll get a crap rating no matter how creative the ride actually is. so my question here: what is origional?

*original[;)][lol]

Well, you do have a point I think, you can create an original ride using an unoriginal layout in a new way, say going underground party or something. But you also have to think about the fact that NL isn't really about the themeing that you make is it? Really the idea of the game is that you create new and interesting layout, elements, inversions etc etc ... So in answer to your question, I guess what is original in real life might not Necessarily be original on NL as NL wasn't designed particularly for making themeing ... if you follow me. I think the idea of NL is to create new layouts in a way ..... sort of [lol]

well thats what I think anyway.

that makes perfect sence- but nl does have theming abilities (object stuff) or even taking an existing ride and putting it in a new terrain or just general screwing around with it- so i think its possible? just wondering what everyone else thinks.

(Can anyone read between the lines here? Geeeeeeeesh ...)

Anyway, in NL you are honestly unable to really theme a ride. So, what do you have left? Building technique (which is a HUGE part of the score), Adrenaline (how much thrill does it actually bring to riders), and what's that third field? Oh yes, originality. How new and fresh is the layout compared to everything else out there?

I think you can agree, after we saw the 100th version of TTD between RCT2 and NL we had all had enough. And how high are we scoring it on originality? We weren't, admit it. So, when designing a ride, a new and fresh layout is really not that hard to come up with ... and with a little extra thought can really change the whole concept of the ride. Throw in some terraforming, trees, perhaps a 3D or two, and wow ... a whole new ride emerges.

So ... apply this train of thought to the other thing you are thinking of and there you have it from my view.

it sounded like you were disagreeing with me for a second but then in the end ya lost me..? and i agree that all of those ttd recreations were getting to be hellish. BUT if you ask me, if one ofthose had the same layout as ttd, but it had much different theming as oh say... i dunno, a space launch and piut the tophat in a building with stars at the top and a few planets and stuff to make it look like you left the atmosphere, i'd give it much highr origionality. oh crap now i want to go make a ride like that lol..

Its a matter of opinion.

I get smoked usually because I spend my time trying to emulate existing styles, basing it off of their principals and such while trying to add my own creative flare. What ends up happening is a ride with similar layout order, differently laid out and with a new element or feeling, but I get the same response "Unoriginal layout - same inversion order"

Seems as though with loopers, the only way to truely stand out is to do stuff thats off the wall. You can take the same inversions, throw them in a totally same order as something else, just totally different, and STILL get the same response from 90% of everyone. The other 10% will notice your effort and the differences, but theres too much parrot-posting going on: Where one person sees someone do it and they follow suit, then they do that forever.

Yes i agree with Real totally!!!!!!!! Like if you are making a B&M coaster you tend to use most of the elements B&M would use to show you are doingit in the style of B&M. But even if you put the elements in a totally different order you will still get slated for not being original.

Alot of people actually say woodis are harder to be original when making them, but they are not!!!! You make a decent and original first drop, and then the rest of the layout just a twister layout and you get rated totally different with a high originality rating! Why is this? I think its because most people on this site are actually steel fans, i think, so we tend to see lots of people making steel coasters and often they all end up looking the same because they are based on rides by the same designers (B&M or Intamin mostly). Okay i tink i have side tracked alot now, so.......... [lol]

Woodies are simple, first drop 2d hill and a s**tload of camelbacks, then a high lateralG turn some bunnyhops, brakes, 180deg. turn and done.
It isn't so hard to come up with a orginal layout, just draw a line on a paper, add station lift brakes inversions height and try to realise your coaster, maybe one out of ten ideas are nothing, but you can start focussing on that good one.

hm.. woodies are hard if you ask me. i spend a lot of time on them- but also i try to incorperate a lot of lateral g's with airtime.. even if the airtime is or isn't caused by your conventional bunny hop. also, you gotta keep it goint till the end. no dead time on a woody. and i like wooden rides that have sudden random forces in all directions- which is probably a lot of my rides get downrated in the tech area even though all of my bumps are put in there on purpose. and the fact that if you want a realistic wood ride, you cant do inversions or fun stuff like that. i really like it when a good wooden ride is uploaded. it seems that steel rides are much easier to make a good layout from considering you have all the ways to twist the steel. and the rest of what i was about to say basically boils down to : yeah, i agree with real. and good job reading between the lines tconwell! lol

Well my personal preference is always to try and build something different and more original, i think most of my tracks will prove this. I alwas wanted to design outside of the box and not follow any real style at all, being B&M or others. All designers should have there ownb styles like musicians do. It is really simply a matter of opinion

I think that i have the same opinion, but once in a while i'd like to design a typical B&M, intamin or vekoma coaster, not re-creations but just the same style and that sort of stuff

My rides show i like making original first drops. You can see this in Archaic, Shadow rider, Vexed (although that was based on the Rattler, even though i had only seen 1 pic of that ride when i made it!). People should go with their own style like the edge said. Then at least you will be happy with it. I design my rides for me only, but then just upload the ones that i feel other people may like. Like someone said, woodies are hard to perfect, but once you have made alot of them, you can really have some fun an make some interesting original layouts.

I actually find steel rides harder to make original, because lots of things have been done with them making it harder to think up something original, and then when you do you get slated for it more. For example the lift hill on my Extremity coaster! [lol]
