Well I can't help you with your own track building skill, but thats how I do any track that is at an angle to the grid lines and its how I've always done it, go on any of my tracks and take a look for yourself, I think you'll find they are all straight [:)] except for maybe my very early tracks when I was still crap.
To help you make it perfectly straight, go onto the top down view again after you've moved the new node into the place you want it and done everything else with it, and look at the previous node, use the pixels on the lines on the handles to see exactly what degree you need to turn the new node to for it to be at the same angle as the previous node, its not rocket science for christs sake.
