True Disneyland could not have been built on time at it's initial scale if corners hadn't been cut. As it was Walt had workers transplanting weeds from the surrounding area and labeling with Latin sounding names just to fill in space and he and his brother mortgage their houses to the hilt.
Speaking of the Matterhorn and mortgages, in 1959 four years after the opening of Disneyland Roy Disney, Walt's brother and financial partner, officially canceled the Matterhorn project as being too expensive and risky. Not long thereafter Roy went to Europe on business and Walt re-mortgaged his house and used the money to un-cancel the Matterhorn.
