Despite my feelings for Apple, I would say the iPod is the most purchased just because it is the best marketed product. I've never heard of any Zen or Archos store, you don't see them featured prominently at major electronics stores, and you can find Apple products all over the place. iTunes gift cards are everywhere, shuffles are in the checkout lines like an afterthought, and buying an iPod at an Apple store is as easy as finding a person and swiping your credit card.

It has a high satisfaction rate mostly because people who get it accept that the features aren't that great to begin with. The touch aspect is cool and cover flow is pretty neat (if you buy your music from iTunes or actually care to individually download and apply album covers), but 8/16gb? Come on, you can do better than that. Unless you get endless joy from watching viral videos, you're going to want to put full-length movies on it some time, which take up WAY more space.

And the price is definitely NOT leveled. $300 is not fair for an iPhone without the phone. And it's even more of a rip-off when you want only twice the space. $300 for 8gb, then bump it up $100 for a measly 16gb? Maybe that price per gigabyte ratio would work better back in 1999 when flash drives were only starting to appear on the market.

The new Zune totally owns the iPods.

Plus, of all the returns we get at Best Buy for mp3 players nearly 90% of them are iPods.

I realllly wish the Zune could playback more than just wma/mp3/wmv. I really like that new one but most of my movies are XviD, H.264 or DivX. Not to mention, transcoding video is a bitch.

iRiver Clix is by far the superior MP3 player if 8gb is good enough for you.

Creative Zen is also the superior MP3 player if you want 16GB.

Copied from a reliable source:

Here's a complete listing of the file formats that you'll be able to play:

Audio:
Protected .WMA files purchased via Zune's marketplace)
.MP3 (unprotected)
.AAC (unprotected)
.WMA (unprotected)

Videos:
.WMV
MPEG-4
H.264

Not to mention Id MUCH rather watch video on a 3.2inch screen than the uber tiny thing on the normal iPods. I know that the iTouch has a rather large 3.5 but seriously - as mentioned - 16gb is a joke. Especially for the price.

It's got nothing to do with you liking the Zune more, you just love Microsoft.

You know you do.
Admit it :D

I hate the new Zune, the menu system is SO ugly, it's huge arial text and it looks really bad, the touch pad is annoying to use and it's not nice looking.

iPods aren't the best MP3 player, but they have the most support.

And Touch being worth the price can be based on it's technology but it all comes down to personal opinion.

I love Apple, I'm not going to deny it, but I only recently got a 2nd gen iPod Nano, and I only payed 20 dollars for it.

I don't fall at their feet and buy everything they release. But I like their products. Who cares if someone thinks it makes them cool to have an iPod? That's their own perception, and they can think that if they want.

You can like the Zune, I don't really care but I don't like it and that's my opinion, so I'm not asking you to chew me up and spit me out :P

And I was kidding about you loving Microsoft.

I actually like the larger Arial font. Ive always liked the simplicity of the Arial font. Plus I find icon menus to be both annoying and childish. Why do I need icons? I can read. Almost all of my windows in XP are set to Detail or List view.

But for the price it simply owns the iPod in useable and credible features. Its rubbish to compare even the 80gb Zune to the iTouch since its completely in its own category. Compare the 80gb Zune with the 80GB Apple and theres no contest. The screens on the iPods are so small and useless why even have a video feature? The only one youd ever watch video on is the iTouch and its ridiculously priced for such small space. The only thing the iTouch has goin for it IS the WiFi but for 400 bucks I can get a cheap laptop, stick another 1gb of ram and Ive got full screen WiFi and not a 3.5 inch screen.

just try ad remember why iPod became so big... it's because they obviously sell good products, and developed themselves a good name- to the extent that they have an incredible reputation. Word-of-mouth is by far the best advertising, it shows that people have brought your product and like it to the extent that they advise it to others.

So why hate them. I didnt get my iPod (30Gb, video) because it's cool, i go against trends because i dont follow the pack, i got one because they are obviously a reliable piece of technology.

iRivers, Zunes... i've barely heard of them, ive never been recomended one so how good can they be? Zens, IMO, are for kids. They are big plastic, bright coloured things.

What about iRiver? they came out before the iPod's, and look cool, and are more functional, there's an *i* for you

16GB is pathetic considering the price. All apple products seem to be horribly lacking in 1 more departments, and this one is no exception. Also Calaway if you base your opinion on a product solely because it has an ugly font you have serious issues that need to be overcame. I still refuse to pay that much money for something that doesn't even allow the freedom to use the music I purchased in their overpriced monopoly store as I please. If I own something I have the right to transfer that file freely as I please between computers and the like. iPods do not allow me this freedom, so they will continue to lose my dollar to far superior products.

I doubt Real will get to reading this comment, but here goes anyway.

Real, did you stop to consider that the Zune and iPod Classic, as they are now known, have the same resolution despite the difference in screen size? So regardless of type it's still a 320 by 240 screen. The Touch does have a higher resolution screen at 480 by 320 pixels.
