I think this whole bible argument is one of those things that makes denominations exists. I didn't realize this til I read over everything after I was done with work, but yea...the bible seems like a learning resource which, if you argue about it, it just makes it a pretty dumb argument. You have to ask yourself in a debate between Christians "do we all still believe the principle of Christianity?"
The Bible is a blueprint for life. Its more than a learning resource but thats part of it. To me it is life. It shows us what we should strive for and the most important part is how to know and interact with God. Its our relationship with Him and other Christians that makes us grow and learn.
I personally think you may not take the bible as seriously as you could. (notice, I didnt say should) It should be something that in any trouble you come across, that should be your first resource. Kind of like that F1 key for programs. The answers are in there. Sometimes obvious, sometimes not. But its way more than just a learning resource. Its historical doctrines that range from creation to the end of times. I would think its more than just a learning resource.
I scrutinize word choice in this subject because word choice reveals alot about what people believe. I find what people say first and what comes to their mind first is a direct reflection of whats truely being felt in their heart.
