i was wondering if anyone has any explanations on how wireless internet works with laptops. I live in a area that is remote, and there is no wireless internet like providers, it's all done through dsl. We have a dsl line on this computer, and the modem that came with it does have wireless abilities, but i didn't hook it up to be wireless when i installed the dsl. the dsl is also running through USB, and not Ethernet. Now im getting a laptop for around the house and stuff. I was wondering how i could get internet to my laptop using my dsl i have now.

I was wondering if it's possible to set up wireless while still having the dsl run USB to this computer, the main family one.

I was also wondering if i'd have to buy anything for my laptop to have wireless dsl, once i get wireless running off my current modem. I put the wireless specs at the bottom of this post

Any help/advice/links would be great, i have a good knowledge on computers, but just not wireless stuff yet.

If your modem is already set up to use wireless all you have to do is login into the router and enable it.

The address is usually something like 192.168.1.1 .

If you still have the manual that will tell you how, otherwise you will need to buy yourself a wireless router to put inbetween your dsl modem and the computer.

Btw : Why aren't you using Ethernet, it doesn't need a driver like USB does.

this computer is so old and doens't have a ethernet hook up, but does have like 6 or 8 usb drives. I do use the 192.168.254.254 (works for me), and i do have the wireless enable, along with the instructions. So once i get a laptop i should be able to just enable wireless, and it should work still USB'd to this pc and wireless-ly with my laptop. The Dell im ordering should have all i need already in it to pick up internet (it's my first laptop)

Yeah, it'll be fine. All modern laptops have a wireless anntena built in behind the screen so as soon as you turn it on it'll pick up your wireless.

I wish wireless internet never needed to be hooked up to a host computer. Then I could have all my computers in my room :-\
