i have been wondering, how do people create flat objects with just one object texture and make it see through, like chain link fences and plants and stuff. can anybody enlighten me?

that texture has a transparant color. If you make the background of your chainlink fence purple and set the transparent color in what 3d-software you use to purple, you'll only see the chainlinks.
But not every 3d-modeler had the transparant color function.

^I don't think that would work, that slides stets the tranperacy for the entire texture.
Now that i think of it, it could also be possible that the key to making things transperant is in the texture itself. By making a texture that has a transparent color it its own, and then loading it into an object creator might also work.

The texture has to be transparent and the object has to be set to double sided so that texture can be seen from both sides.

So basically I used Targa files because they are 32bit and support transparency. Then I had to have the right color (cant remember it now) that ISNT rendered and that color was my background. Then in ANOTHER layer on top I made my texture to be seen and saved as a 32bit targa with transparency. Imported into 3dmax - applied attributes as said above and voila - fence with 2 polys.
