What do you think about an MSI

I believe MSI is good. A friend of mine has a Sager though, very good company as well. A little over-priced but not as much as most other places. His laptop is 2 1/2 years old, and he has had zero issues. Very strong, quality chassis that has yet to show signs of wear. Plays games very well at decent resolutions/quality settings.

I am all about desktops though. All my friends try to compete, but I have all bragging rights. Seems like everyone else lags with terrible FPS when Crysis is maxed out. However, I was chugging along with 45-60 FPS absolutely slaughtering each and every one of them.

CP-Soad: Nice rig! Did you go to 4GHZ without changing the voltage?
Macchiato: How does NL work with Vista 64bit?

I'm going to answer to three of these, even though two are not directed to me.

Good choice going with Intel in my opinion.
A battle of Quality/Performance VS Price.
I'm glad you aren't a cheap ash. [^]
To bad you can't get that offer on Newegg though, really awesome deal.

Thanks, I got up to 3.78Ghz on the stock voltage of 1.2V. To get to 4Ghz though I raised slightly to 1.375V. If I could give you advice, DO NOT try overclocking an i7 with the stock cooler. They run hot at factory speeds already. Pick up a decent air cooler. Something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835608007 would help you achieve a high and stable overclock fairly easily. Unless you want to go a little over-board, then I would say get a liquid setup. Not cheap though, cheap liquid setups generally have terrible reviews. Example would be their chip ran cooler with the even cheaper air cooler they had previously.

I have Vista Home Premium 64-bit. NoLimits runs flawlessly (for me). It has never crashed or had any weird issues. The only difference I noticed between NoLimits on XP vs Vista is that it looks cooler in Vista when the Aero theme is enabled [:D]

How about Windows 7?
Anyone tryed that?

Also, the final setup will probably be the same as the first one, except for the RAM and the HDD
-OCZ Platinum 3x2GB 1600MHZ
-WD caviar Black
BTW, anyone have any experience with Seagate Barracuda 11?

Well, basically, I just ran into some financial problems, and probably won't be able to afford a i7 machine... :(
Anyway, what do you think of this one, I just put together, as a substitute:
-AMD Phenom II x4 940 black edition (that's an AM2+ socket)
-Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4 (the only thing that bothers me is that it doesn't support SLI...)
-Mushkin PC2-6400 "Extreme" KIT 4096 MB (800Mhz)
-Gainward GTX 260 GS
-Western Digital 1TB caviar black
-Silverstone SST-ST70F "Strider" PSU (700W)
-NEC AD 7230S labelflash optical unit
-Antec Three Hundred case

If you have an idea for a better setup, please, I'd be more than willing to take a look!

EDIT: Hello? Anyone?
Also, does anyone have any bad experience with AMD Phenom 2x4 CPUs? Like overheating?

save up for the i7 would be my suggestion... and don't go for any "260 GS" models. Instead buy one of the top notch models from the last generation of GPUs such as the 9800 GT/GTX...

Why go for the 9800GT/GTX cards when you can get a faster GTX260 SP126 card? That doesn't make much sence. Especialy since the GTS250 is jsut a rebranded 9800GTX+. I tried the GTS250 and the GTX260 SP216(which I have now) and believe me, the GTX260 is WAY faster!

alright im just going to say what i have with current prices and say its amazing, and you should get it. you seem to be a amd guy so i might need to convert you but (oh, and 1TB? Better off getting one at 10K instead of 7200, or better yet a 15K it will be a lot faster write speed for your HDD).

Anyways im rollin:
cpu -Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHZ - $190
ram -Corsair 2X2GB DDR2 800 - $47
mobo -Asus P5Q Pro - $120
gsu -Sapphire Radeon HD4870 512MB - $150
psu -SeaSonic 500W - $83
cpu cooler - arctic cooling freezer 7 - $32
dvd - LG22X DVD+R - $23
hdd - seagate barracude 7200RPM 250GB - $53
media reader - Koutech card reader - $17
monitor1 - viewsonic 17" (4 years old, but original like $300 now at $160
monitor2 - gateway HD2200 - $150 (returned monitor, nothing wrong)

if you forget the ricer case and monitor i bought, that is $715. If you include a keyboard, standard case, monitor and mouse, you're looking at maybe $900.

Im not gonna lie, this thing is really powerful and fast. NL is at a constant 100 with max settings, even on thunderhead falls. typically i am using this for business and it is ridiculously helping me. im running photoshop, dreamweaver, several firefox windows, outlook, an IM and music and the temp wont go up any, and it is only running at about 10% capacity, at most. this machine is really amazing. if you are in school and want a great gaming machine, it really pwns. its awesome at business and fun. btw, notice how that is 500W? never loses power, ever. this is extremely comperable to what you are wanting. you don't need more than 600W, really dont but anything higher than that, 500-550 is perfect for you.

Your not calculating in the difference in ram price, the motherboard price (they cost like 1/2-1/3 the price, and that they also overclock extremely well. The phenom II series actually has record breaking overclocks. The phenom II series runs very cool unlike the original phenom series.

At Ragan. The phenom II is generally a better cpu than the e8500. It has about equal performance per clock, and has twice as many cores. It also destroys the e8500 when it comes to memory bandwidth. Also, he's playing games, not running a server. A SAS HD is overkill for his needs. However you do have a solid system and I will agree that the radeon series is quite attractive.

OMG, a miracle has happened!
I have found a way to buy an i7 setup, WITH a monitor for only 965#8364;!
YAY!

And no, it's not a preassembled computer... I'm puting it together myself!
:D

Setup:
i7 920
Gigabyte UD3R
OCZ 3x2GB RAM kit, 1600 MHz (the one optimized for i7)
Gainward GTX 260 GS
WD Caviar Green (sry, Jimmy, the difference between a black and a green here is too big...)
Antec 300
Mushkin XP-800AP 800W
Nec 7203S Labelflash
Screen: LG W2252TQ-PF

What do you think about the screen?

I'm looking at a new laptop, and i'm curious to hear whether you would reccomend going with 8gb ddr2 ram or 6gb of ddr3 ram? Other specs would be intel core 2 duo T9600, ATI mobility radeon HD 4650. What do you think?

Vid_w: I have had 1333 Mhz RAM and currently have 1600 Mhz ram (both OCZ and 6GB kits) and I have to say there is zero noticeable difference. Honestly, I feel like I wasted my money. If I were you I'd save a few extra bucks and just get a 6GB 1333Mhz kit. Brand wise though, OCZ is awesome! As for the LG W2252TQ-PF, it looks real good. Nice resolution, quick response time, the LG name, etc. The size, in my opinion is a little lacking though. If you can afford a 24" I would definitely recommend to go that rout. I game on a 27" and it is absolutely amazing, very immersive, the bigger the better.

yoshifreak: I'd say to create a new topic but if the RAM is your only question then I'll just answer it. In general, it would be extremely difficult to use 8GB of RAM. I have 6GB and I have trouble even using half of it. Considering you are talking about a laptop, the DDR2 is probably running at 667 Mhz or 800 Mhz while the DDR3 is probably running at 1066 Mhz or 1333 Mhz. The DDR2, although slower in speed will have tighter timings than the DDR3. Essentially, they would be close to equal in performance, you would really not tell the difference. My suggestion there is to just save your money and get whatever is cheaper.

I'd still recomend either going core 2 or Phenom II and getting a better graphics card or getting a better monitor. Look at the 2209wa, 2408wfp, 2709w, or the HP LP2475w. They are all wide view angle lcds with rotation, height adjustment, and tilt.

Thanks guys!
Altho, a bit late...
I ordered 2 days ago! [:P]

As for the monitor, I went with an ACER one, the P224Wabmid, it was 30% off... :D
