I created an object in Sketchup and I'm having problems with the texturing. In this picture it shows 2 areas of ground in this tunnel, one on the left which is white, the other on the right is brown. This is how it shows up in my NL sim, The object is supposed to be brown on both parts but certain random parts show up white, and others correctly brown. Does anyone know why this is so?

In sketchup, only color the white sides of objects with textures. It can also be because sketchup sucks at exporting into 3d file format. In that case, you will need someone to run it through something like 3ds max to fix the problem.

That did the trick, thanks for the help. I find myself with a new problem now. This time in the NL Sim, and not sketchups problem. The sides of my object in the sun are great looking, and the sides that dont face the sun are completely black and can't be seen at all. I think a solution is to create a new environment that would solve this? Does anybody have a regular sunny-dayish looking environment that they could spare me that doesnt have this problem, by maybe having the sun overhead or something? Or another way to solve it?

Haha, thats the problem that I have too. I dont know what the solution there would be, aside from a new enviorment (if that will work)

I'm gonna try some different environments and see if it changes

I'm guessing that comes from sketchup's material exporting to 3ds. See if you can modify the lighting settings of materials in sketchup; most likely you just need to set the ambient color to match the diffuse.

From the looks of it, sketchup doesn't seem to be very good at 3ds exporting. Can you even use .png's with alphas or use environment maps?

I don't think I can find a way to edit the ambient color. Here's a picture example to show whats happening if I didn't explain it well enough. As you can see pic 1 looks good but pic 2 is all dark, they should be the same. And if I change to like sunset environment the sun is on the other side of the map and the colors are switched. So I don't think its the object

That's exactly what I mentioned in my post. Looks like Sketchup's no good; I wouldn't trust it not to screw up smooth shading, polygon connection, etc. when it exports to .3ds. Then again, you can't trust Anim8or nor even 3ds max itself not to do those things either.

How optimized is Sketchup? If you're getting unecessary polygons (move around the cam in the sim and look inside your models) where they aren't otherwise visible, then you'll want to find a way to fix those up. Unecessary polygons can add up and drain framerates even on faster computers if you have many models in use.

I'd also suggest improving the dirt texture. Here's an example of what I did in photoshop for one of my rides.

You can use that directly if you want, I really didn't do much to it. (both of the textures originate from NL anyways)

Another thing to consider is texture mapping itself. It seems that Sketchup has done a decent job of avoiding horrid stretching. However, the number of repeats don't seem to be high enough, thus resulting in a blurry, undetailed landscape.

I know these are probably dumb things to consider, but they do improve the riding experience, and if you're good with them, don't take that long to do.

Well I am pretty much retarded when it comes to most things like photoshop and texture editing and avoiding horrid stretching. This was the best terrain I could get for the look I wanted which was more of a sandy desert. I was trying to get it to be like a desert but not the yellowish sand that NL has that looks like it belongs more on a beach. You're texture is nice and detailed by the color is just not right for what I'm trying to get.
