easiest way you can do it to just show the proof of concept:
top down, have snap on. make 3 nodes. make 2 different sized beams in width and connect them both to the middle beam. Make sure the beams are perfectly aligned. color them differently. make a flange on each beam. push them both together. Freeze and behold.
Basically when you make a flange on a beam and take it all the way to the edge it keeps only half of the flange. That's one way I've made custom footers and other rail connectors using nothing but supports.
