I'm just now, after two years, getting a message on my computer saying that my copy of windows is not genuine. lol I'm actually glad to hear that because I bought my copy for $25 and its XP Pro. Meh, I'll just wait for Vista
By the way, if you want to remove that, you are taking your own chances by messing with the registry if you do not know how - so you can follow this or of course, get a licensed copy bud:
Lol crazy m$...I'm willing to bet a hack was put out for that on the same day it was released. Liek omg its t3h uber popup balloon to pwn your illegalness!111 lawlz...very effective m$, very much so. And as for vista - if it ever comes out - it sucks up 15GB of space for drm junk and then requires at least 512MB of ram, while 1 gig is suggested. that's more than my pc right now which can game pretty happily (although it is 3.5 years old and was cheaper than my monitor).
^^^512MB of RAM is pretty low end right now. For them to say that 1GB is reccommended is about right. What about games like COD2, Battlefield 2 and such that have the same requirements? They say no less than 512 and more than 1GB reccommended.
Dont act like its too much. Its just technology progressing.
I think too many people are conspiracy theorists to be perfectly honest. And MS is a nice large scapegoat. If I were Gates and had all these programs, alot of which are great (Office rules) I would watch them like hawks too.
Hey, Im not using Vista. XP Media Center is perfect right now. Im not really talking about the security issues with Vista.
The same exact things were happening when XP was about to come out. Thats why they do testing. To catch these things. If they do plan to release with all these holes...good luck.
hey man I didn't even know. I thought I had just come across a good deal. and I mean, hey it works, and its not like microsoft is prosecuting me or anything, so whats the big deal?
Wait wait wait...1GB is being realistic...for an operating system? Uhhmmm....call me crazy but I disagree. I have ubuntu running on a celeron at 233 MHz and 96MB pc100 RAM. And I didn't disable any graphics. It runs pretty much anything pretty happily. In fact, it can run Win2k and XP a tad on the slow side - but it can still run them. From the sounds of it, Vista would murder this machine, not to mention it would suck up 15 Gb of the 13 GB hard disk.
Now switch to windows and games. Call of Duty 2 requires at least 512MB to run (and barely on my machine), 1GB gives quite a significant boost in performance too. However, last time I checked, Vista isn't a highly intensive first person shooter, yet it utilizes that much RAM? Pathetic. I'm sticking to Xp and Ubuntu/Fedora/OpenBSD/GentooGNU. What the hell is next? "YOU NEED A 800W PSU WITH 90 AMPS ON THE 12V LINE!" Or perhaps "Multi-GPU solutions are highly recommended to run graphically intense programs like m$ word." i repeat myself: pathetic.
Vista will be a more interactive 3d interface - thats why. Its not going to be the same old 2d interface we are used too.
Is that good or bad? Who knows. I doubt anyone here has it (legally) or in its final stages so its hard to tell just how well or how crappy it works. But from what Ive seen in video, the 1GIG reccomend is justified.
It's justified - but it's not supposed to be a 3D game. It's supposed to simply be your computer's base file system and service management system to keep thigns running smoothly - which as it is, windows can't do. I don't see how adding 3D FX will make it any better. I'm not switching unless m$ can pull something "good" off. I can start to see why more and more are joining the linux bus - and good for them. They're starting to become exposed to something better.
I think it's definitely for gamers and people who like media, honestly no point in spending that cash on a brand-new top-of-the-line OS if your only doing basic things.
Here's how I see it, if you don't care enough to continously keep up with technology by upgrading then you don't care enough to use the new OS. It's really just the evolution of technology, what did you want just another XP with a slightly different interface?
Anything around that era was considered great, even the games. I think this is because the range of computer technology was pretty slim, and so was the rate in which it evolved. This resulted in software lasting much longer.
But now a computer setup is likely to be considered outdated and replaced after a year of use.
Your situation being what? And yes - it's suitable for everyone except for hardcore gamers and the likes who need compatibility at LANs (had a problem once with that nearly) and people who need uber good video card support (drivers are sometimes issues). Game compatibility has been much les of a problem in the recent future due to Cedega. WINE is still fine to run games with, but not as good as cedega from my experience. Linux is a very good environment for all typical application.s
my situation being that I have an illegal copy of windows and not enough cash to get a legal one. but that's actually not a problem anymore because I just found my old XP Home upgrade cd which I found I can actaully use as a new install disc (instead of buying one that is made for a new install).
but yea I'm definately thinking of getting like a 250gb hdd and partitioning it. If I do, and I have windows on one section and linux on the other, could I run both at the same time?
At the same time in reality, no, otherwise if you mean a dual boot setup (you can boot one at a time, restart, and then boot the other) then yes it's easy. You just gotta decide whether you want to use the linux bootloader or the windows one. There are trillions of articles on this online, so I'm not gonna bother posting how. Google be thy friend if needed. (goooo linux!)
