I don't know why I'm telling you to wear pads when I usually scooter without a helmet.[xx(]

I grew up on a hill in Santa Rosa on a road called Grace Dr. it is an almost straight down hill slope at about a 5-7 percent grade with just a slight bump and a curve in the middle where our house was (and an intersection with Gross Dr. Yes, I grew up on the intersection of Grace and Gross).

A couple of times a year some skateboarders would try and tackle that hill, and every time they'd wipe out and we'd go out and pick up the pieces. We stocked bandages, splints, gauze, antiseptics etc. etc. Several times we had to call an ambulance.

That pretty much sold me on protective gear.
