CBS Corp.'s decision to put its Paramount Parks division up for sale won't affect the opening of Paramount's Kings Island in Mason on April 14.

CBS, which split from Viacom Inc. on Jan. 1, said Thursday it has already received interest in the amusement park business, which has five parks drawing more than 12 million visitors annually. CBS said it expects to complete the sale by the end of the year.

A spokesman said Kings Island, which had 3.3 million visitors last year, will debut several new attractions this spring, including Nickelodeon Universe.

Besides Kings Island, the CBS unit operates Carowinds in Charlotte, Canada?????????s Wonderland in Toronto, Great America in Santa Clara, Calif., and Kings Dominion in Richmond, Va

Paramount Parks for Sale

Parent company Viacom is seeking to sell its chain of North American theme parks as the media giant is split into two companies. As 2006 begins, Viacom's MTV Networks and Blockbuster Group will separate from its production interests, which include Paramount Pictures, and CBS television and radio. Also on the block are Simon & Schuster along with the parks. Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone stated that the company must limit itself to assets that ensure growth, and neither the publishing house nor the chain of amusement parks are seen as having growth potential. The parks include Paramount's Great America (California), Kings Island (Ohio), Kings Dominion (Virginia), Carowinds (North / South Carolina), Canada's Wonderland (Ontario), and Star Trek: the Experience (Nevada). Paramount also holds a contract to manage Bonfante Gardens theme park in California. All combined, the parks own and operate a total of 60 roller coasters. It was also announced at year's end that Paramount Pictures would purchase Dreamworks SKG for $1.6 billion.
