I'm wondering how the hydraulic launch system and brake fins work. I know a little bit about them (the hydraulic is a catapult) but I really want to know how they work.

well I can explain how the brake fins work, but I think I'll have to leave the Hydraulic luanch system to someone else .

On the bottom of the trains are some magnets and when the train is going along a regular piece of track without the copper alloy fins on, there is nothing affecting the magnetic field of that magnet, but when the copper alloy fins are raised, they interfere with the magnetic field and slow the train down .... or something like that [:)]

I know sort of how the Launch system works, but I don't think I'll risk the embarresment

I was pretty sure the break fins had something to do with magnets.

here's something less complicated:

hydrualic launch system are based on the fact that you can't compress a fluid. so it's an easy formable, yet remaining the same volume.
now here's a try-at-home: take on plastic tube, two bolts and water.
hold one bolt in the end of the tube (make sure it fits exactly) and fill the tube with water, now push the bolt in the front of the tube and the end bolt will be launched out.
KK and TTD use the same, but with (i think) 17 large tubes, airpressure and hydraulic oil that all power a cable which is attached to a clamp-car the (yes indeed) clamps onto the car...

as for brakes, the magnetics fins produce the same electric flied as the charge of the plates on the car (+ or -, i dunno), and you know, holding two magnet with the same charge will cause them to bounce, in the launch-coaster caswe, slowing them down

don't you want to know how a coaster can leave your cheecks at the station?

Theres no chains in the system, its all cables and pulleys.
