^This is the reason more people should get Macs. OS X is the most stable Mac OS ever not to mention it comes with lots of cool stuff including Garage Band. Linux is also good and is also very stable.

Doesn't linux/unix own the title for longest time without a shutdown? Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Macs based of unix?

I have not had a blue screen since I got XP, which was...well when XP came out. How many years has that been?

I dont do any more updates than any normal person. However, I feel if you do things that would subject your computer to becoming unstable, thats your fault.

Id put money that I could crash a Mac if I tried. Just like there are some things I do on XP that I shouldnt, but I try anyways. These things would include trying to run Adobe Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator, Winamp/iTunes, NL and other NL programs. NO OS can handle all those running together with me flipping between them. At some point the hardware wont keep up and so the OS will flip out and kill one or the other.

You'd be surprised. A good unix os is very stable. A graphics designer workload is NOTHING. Remember these systems have been useded for years as true enterprise level servers. That's a bit tougher on a server than a few Adobe apps...

^Unix is used when whatever needs to be done really counts. Many radar's around the world use it and some have been running steady without a shutdown for 15 years. Can't say that about a Windows PC.

But Unix isnt used normally for graphics or even video. Macs are because they are the next best thing. Ive contacted quite a few around here and on the internet and the standard is the MacOS for obvious reasons. But its not perfect.

I dont think Ive had any one yet tell me they use true server unix for graphics or video, just not practical. But yes there are solutions out there designed to handle certain loads.

Oh, windows Xp came out in 2001, and Windows Vista the new version is now coming out next year, but i am a COmputerwiz, LOL but anyways, i update my computer all the time, and all that other crap, even take it apart and put it back tgether, but it crashes me all the time, but my mac, it has never once crashed.Which now this leads me to a Funny Joke that i have on my "Computer Geek" Caleader

Bill Gates Moment

At Comdex, Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry, "If GM (General Motors) had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving twenty-five dollar cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."
Recently General Motors Addressed this comment by releasing the statement "yes, but would you want your car to crash twice a day?"[devilish]

Almost all the early 3d movie graphics (T2, Jurassic Park, etc) were done on SGI Irix machines. SGI ruled the graphics market back in the early 90s. As another example, Weta Digital down in New Zealand (LoTR, etc) runs a pure Linux envirnonment.

WRONG! Tiger is the most stable OS ever![:D]
But yeah, I really like my computer, and I really like macs OS X and up (any version before I just can't stand). But MACs can play barely any games, which is why a PC is good. But as long as you don't dl any crap to your windows (not mindows[lol]) and use it purely for work applications, its usually alright.

^^You know I was implying Tiger (Mac OS 10.4) there although I still run Panther (Mac OS 10.3). I also hate anything under OS X because quite frankly, OS 9 just sucked. It ran so bad on the green iMac we had that we put OS 8.6 on it to make it bearable.

hmmm a good computer wont crash on you unless of course you abuse it. I've owned my sony puter for like 2-3 years now and man, I saw the first blue screen of death a few weeks ago, after that many years of useage. Now I have a crappy compaq which that thing will crash, but that is because everything else in it is crap, so if you run crap, crap will happen. Run good stuff and your odds of having crap displayed is minized greatly.

The crashability of windows is based soley on the user. As long as you are careful with your time on the internet and make sure to properly unistall stuff, defrag, and just clean up hard drive space on a regular basis Windows won't crash on you. A healthy reformating of windows is a pretty good practice to go through every few years. I reformated when I got a major upgrade for the whole system and boy am I happy.

The one obvious drawback of using Windows vs Mac is that people genrally like to write viruses and other malitious software for windows becuase they want to "stick it to the man, becuase Open Source is better" Which is sad but true.

Totall agree with the guy above me here.

  • Clear your cache on a regular basis
  • Uninstall software you don't use
  • Defragment the computer every week.
  • Apply registry tweaks.

The only person to blame when the computer goes wrong is the guy or gal who is operating it and doesn't know what their doing.

Yes, but see you should not have to do all that, what average user, besides you and me does that? not many people, now on this site, probly most of us do, but we should not have to, see with macintoshs, you dont have to Defrag, Virus Scan, Spyware scan, or anything, they are free of all that crap. Also, no Virus has been succefully writen for a mac, they are pretty hard to crack, here's the evidence.

Hmmm... i think i know what i am doing, plus i defrag it once a day, delete caches, Delete internet Files, and Delete all the other crap, i also do a SCAN DISK, that has not been noted, the scan disk removes errors, but it never works.
