Hey, I have had a problem not with my computer, but with my sisters, actually its her problem but yeah...

A power surge hit the computer, and now it won't start up at all, which is a problem because she has had it since 2001 and no she did not backup a single file. So we need to get her files off... But how? I tried sticking her hard drive in my computer since they are about the same, but no use, it just kept rebooting. I tried putting my power sorce into her computer, and it started up but there was just a black screen. Now i put her computer back to the way it was hard drive back in, and power source and it still won't start up at all, Which i firgured. So is there any way to get those files off besides haveing to go to best buy, and having to pay $100 which is a rip off i think, or compusa. Any way to get the files at all like through DOS? well if you could help it would be very well thanked.

Well thank's for your time.

If you put her hard drive in your computer but keep yours in, it should boot up like normal and recognize her's as just another drive. If you put her's in and take out yours, it'll probably have trouble loading windows.

Also you can get external enclosures for hard drives that convert their connection from whatever it is (IDE, SATA) to USB2, 1394, etc and they're relatively cheap online ($20 for a good one).

One last question- you're aware of the effects of static electricity on a computer right? No offense, I'm just not aware of what experience you may have.

just don't forget to chance the hard drive to a secondary harddrive when you put is internal

How do you know it was a power surge?

Anyways, I would just go and buy a $20 USB 2.0 hard drive enclosure at CompUSA. If the drive doesn't work in that then there isn't much hope, but at least you can return enclosure if it doesn't work.

I actually had almost the same problem. My last computer had a bitch fit, so I ripped out my old hard drive and now I'm using it as an external music drive. The USB 2.0 connection isn't the best, but you can always go up one step to a Firewire connection.

You need to take ownership of those folders to be able to view them. Umm, I just had a reply typed, but the damn page refreshed. So uh, yeah I'm going back to the football party. [lol]

I'll check back to see if anyone else tells you the method.

Thanks for the advice, dont worry about posting the information I got it, I went on my computer in safe mode, and went to properties on the folder, then went to security and changed some things, and yeah i got in and viewed the files, and am now backing them up as i type this on our other computer.

Thank you all for your help.

Thats why I use a surge protector. You know, the pretty white things with 6 or so plugs. You should get one, and if you do have one then =P I guess it didn't work. And plus my computer is in the basement, grounded automatically.

And you are lucky, I've seen what can happen from lightning.

I find it easiest just to turn the computer off when there is lightning outside. Unplug it from the wall and you're as safe as can be.

We have a surge protector on all of our computers, but they dont always work. Also surges dont just come from lightning they can be in the electricity like if it goes on and off really fast. Or at least that's what ive heard. yes we are very Lucky.
