That is the number of estimated people on earth as of today, Sat., Feb. 25, 2006. Stupid people really need to stop love. Scientists speculate that the earth is only really meant to hold about 2-3 billion.

I like what China is doing, giving special little benefits to those with only 1 child, it really does keep the population from growing massively, secondly, USE A CONDOM!!!

The population isn't going up because more people are being born (not that that's not true), its that less people are dying than would have thousands of years ago. Something that might have killed someone then is easily treatable now.

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's all medical advancements. You do need people to have people. Keeping random people alive slightly longer wouldn't increase the population as much as it has.

we arent saying that it is ALL, we are saying a good reason the population is larger is because people are living longer.

My original post was more backing up what guitar player said. However my post is partially correct.

I suppose not 100% of it is from medicine alone. However a great percentage is directed toward overall health in general that keeps the population sustained. Living conditions are MUCH better than they were back in the day.

There are a ton of factors one can place into why the population is greater. However, I do believe that the biggest factor is indeed medicine. Think of everything that could contribute. Much of it boils down to health and medicine.

Over the years warfare has evolved. It once took massive amounts of infantry to win a battle. The advent of the gun has reduced the number of people in the field of fire, therefore less people to kill. America doesn't exactly have the same size army we had in WW2 than what we have now. Theres a reason for that. Warefare evolved. So, you have more advanced warfare, with less troops in the field, you also have better medicine. People who are injured now have a much higher chance of living than for a similar injury 1000 years ago. We also are a time of relative peace. yes wars are being fought, they arn't being fought as often or as bloody as times past. Therefore more people are living.

So we got less wars (not medicine) and less people being killed (is medicine).

More people alive = more babies

If you look at how humans have now evolved and how we have learnt from the past, it is no surprise that the population is growing at such a rate. Take the Bubonic Plague (black death) for example. The plague wiped out over half the population on Earth. The reason being, they did not control the spread of the plague. No care was taking when loading and unloading ships, there was no quarantines put in place, no cure available to the entire population etc etc. In the modern world, strict measures are put in place to ensure a plague or such is confined to a small area and scientists all over the world help to find a cure. Anyway plague you have heard about on the news never kills more than a couple of hundred people, if we went back a thousand or so years, I would expect the very same plague would have put the exsistance of mankind in question

i think because there are more people than the planet can hold, there are more natural disasters. it sounds weird but the earth is basically one giant living thing and we are like a virus. so, the earth is using all its natural "antibodies" to wipe us out. what humans have done to practically destroy the earth for their own benefit is disgusting.

The earth isn't "trying to get rid of us," the same natural disasters hapening now have been happenening for millions of years; earthquakes, tsunamis, etc.

But who knows if it is actually better for humans that we live in a climate that the earth had millions of years ago? No one really knows how it was for sure. And no one has that long of a life span. The climate today may be too cold. Or too hot..

you really wont accept the fact that you are wrong set your mind will you? [lol] the thruth is, earth can hold, comfortably, about 15 billion people. we just havent set up the our countries correctly, so currently, i'd say about 10 billion is the most earth could support.

and to dissprove what you have said throughout this thread, you just said we dont know what the climate was millions of years ago, so how would YOU know how much people can live on earth today?

But still, a few things that are happening now were probably not happening before. But the earth isn't trying to get rid of us..lol. I also read that every 24 hours, around 220,000 people are born. But people die too, so it's not like every 24 hours the population increases by 220,000...

^Hmmm. So you're basically saying that all the proof of the climate change contained in both ice, rocks, bones, and other artifacts is wrong? Humans are adapted to live in certain temperature ranges. It was not too hot or cold for humans to live millions of years ago. If it gets more humid, we get used to it. If it gets hotter, we get used to it. We are adaptable.
