Latest News from Sportsline.com: "Panthers LW Richard Zednik underwent surgery to close a deep gash on the right side of his neck, after he was cut by a teammate's skate during a game against the Sabres on Sunday night. Zednik was in stable condition at a Buffalo hospital. Blood gushed from Zednik's neck after he was hurt midway through the third period of Buffalo's 5-3 victory, creating a frightening moment that delayed the game for about 15 minutes, and there was a brief discussion about postponing the game altogether."

Right now, he is questionable for the next game, so it looks like it was not that bad, but serious enough that as a long time hockey fan and player, I am wondering what ripples this may send through the NHL.

Consider this, in what other sport do you have a standard piece of equipment that requires regular sharpening to the point of being able to cut flesh instantly? Many-a-days I sliced a little line in my finger testing the edge on my blade ... this could be quite interesting if not considered and dismissed to be what it really was, a freak accident.

That announcer totally killed somebody.

The first announced said something about how he had never seen that much blood so fast, and the other one said "I'm affraid I have... I don't want to recall it."

LOL

Ice Hockey is pwnsome.

Shocking though that was, shows you the dangers doesn't it. He looked fine as he was going off the ice, until he was going through the barrier, if you look at his hand and the bloke carrying him, he looks like he's dropped unconscious or something, probably from shock.

Hell no. It is hockey, every player has two of these machetes attached to their feet. It is a freak accident.

^ But still, it happens.

Whether they want to use the protection or not, that's for themselves to decide..

But it's still dangerous, but then again, that comes with the sport.

I would be more afraid of getting a puck to the face than being cut by a skate.

Anyone who thinks hockey should have neck guards doesn't play the game. It's easy to sit back and say those things if you don't lace up the skates, but for those of us who do, we wouldn't think twice about it. I got nailed in the face last summer with a puck, somehow didn't break my nose. I choose not to wear a mask of any kind, just a helmet. I know the risks of not wearing a faceshield of some kind, as well do all the other people who don't wear one. I also don't wear upper body protection because I don't like them. I frequently go down a block shots. If I got hit with a slap shot right into the heart I could die, just like Pronger? in 1998, his heart failed and was brought back to life. He too, knew the consequences. Zednik knew the consequences. I know the consequences. Everyone who plays knows the consequences.

While the pro game has many flaws currently, which all need to be improved to make the NHL a top-tier sport in USA with football, baseball and basketball; hockey as far as safety wise is as good as it needs to get. Up until you're 18, EVERYONE must wear a full-cage. Than after that in most leagues you have the option of wearing a visor. Only being paid to play or adult leagues is where you have the option to go no face protection. They do this so the players not wearing the protection are seasoned players and know what they're doing.

Anyways, the only way you get hurt in hockey are on freak things like this, nothing to get your panties twisted up for. There is nothing you can do about it. Just wrong place wrong time, which fortunately, doesn't happen that often.

As a goalie in high school I took two pucks in the throat that one took a weird bounce off my blocker and one off the ice in front of me and had it not been for my neck guard who knows what could have happened. I am all for protection on the ice, and I shudder at those who mock it. Remember when the likes of players like Gordie Howe used to barely wear a helmet? Man, I shudder to think of those days ever even being a reality again. Certainly ragan I agree ... this was wrong place, wrong time.

Shudder at I, than. [:p] I feel as if if you want to wear it, go for it. But it shouldn't be mandatory. Players realize the consequences. Hell, if I had the option, I'm not quite sure if I wouldn't go no helmet. Sweat always gets in my eyes, but when I play pond hockey or a skate around I am fine.

I always use a helmet, except if I am playing something like pond hockey where the puck doesn't get too high or just skating around.

Besides the good 'ole cup, I think the helmet is one of the most important piece of protective equipment a hockey player can use. I couldn't imagine playing a shift without one. The chances of having your skull smashed off of the glass or the ice is just to great.

And pucks to head scare me :(

though I am all for letting mature players choose their own equipment.

Well, like some already said, let them decide to wear it, and if something does go wrong, then you're screwed basicly..
