Can anyone give any tips on how to make custom supports look good?

To make good looking custom supports, you need to have a plan first of all. You need to see how everything is gonna connect up. Don't forget that you can do other cool things with them too (headchoppers, etc.). Just visualize what you want and how you can get there. Take your time and go through it slowly. Yes, it will drive you crazy so do it over the time span of a couple of days.
