DVD drive issue

I was wondering if anyone can help me with this.

I only discovered this recently, but my DVD-Rom Drive doesn't seem to read any discs. The Device Manager says it fine, and it's firmware is up to date. But when I put in a games the use it [the sims 2] or a movie... it just says "Please insert Disc"

I've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling and even setting my computer back with System Recovery just incase, but nothing seems to help.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Yeah, it seems like that might be the case cause we've had our Dell for a little more than 3 years.

my drive does that too sometimes, but normally I just take it out and put it back in a couple times and it works.

make the holder a little wider, enough to fit a cup then use it as a cup holder since it no longer will work as a dvd drive

I still have one question. Is there anyway I can watch DVD's on my computer without it?

Try restoring your computer to an earlier date. It happened to me with my RCT2 disc

Yeah open the holder they are in and voila, you can watch the DVD sitting there [:)] I crack myself up, I hate mornings

You could rip the DvD to like an avi or somthing, and just watch it with winamp (or, do you need a DvD drive to rip DvD's also?)

Well, I can't rip it. Cause if I put it in the CD drive it won't read it.

And if the DVD drive doesn't read the disc... how would I be able to open the folder?[xx(]

i was going to suggest buying a new dvd thing for you....that might work out a tad bit better. make sure yours isnt compleetely dead first though.

Well, this is usually the first sign of it going bad and needing to be replaced. Hardware is not meant to be jerry-rigged to work, it either does work properly or it does not. Might as well just replace it now instead of waiting for the actual crash.
