Discuss pros and cons of each console. The games coming out for it, ect. Feel free to post your online sceen names in the articles still.

So anyways as I was at an EB games last night, and they brought out one of those HD-DVD drives for the xbox360. $215 which, after the add on, would roughly put the xbox360 in the same price range as the PS3. I think its smart that Microsoft has it as an add on, because then people can buy the 360 for the cheaper price, and if they feel like being technologically advanced, or w/e, they can add the HD-DVD drive to it. Go Microsoft! w00t![^]

Yeah Microsoft must be pretty a** rich by now. I have a 360 and, IMO, I'm perfectly fine without the HD-DVD drive. I'm not "technologically advanced", as you explain it. I'm only for playing games on the game consoles, which is traditionally their soul purpose (hence the name GAME console) But I still support all of these new discoveries and add-ons to game platforms and systems. Our society is really digging itself into the future of today.

The drawback of the high-def drive is it only plays hd-dvd movies and not games in that format :( (allowing the PS3 to have greater sized games on Blu-Ray) .But, the HD-DVD drive is fully compatible for all PCs, just need the right drivers (that Cyber-DVD whatever software company that includes its dvd software in most new computers makes a downloadable suite for playing Blu-Ray and HD-DVD).

Now, onto the topic:
PS3: more power, more power, Blu-Ray, not so many release titles, OK online play, expensive, can run linux :)

Xbox 360: middle power (still HD but not as much), dvd drive (add-on hd-dvd), lots of games (namely Gears of War, Halo 3 (when it comes out)), middle priced, great online play

Wii: cheap, not so powerful, intuitive, easy to learn, unique, plays retro games, good online play/service

I like the PS3 just because it toasts the other consoles, but they are all different in a way so you can't really compare them side by side (one is a powerhouse, the other is run-of-the-mill, and the other is unique and technologically lame).

</end horribly boring and stupid review>

^The ps3's online play is very similar to Valve's Steam platform. it's very easy to use, and of course, it's free. I don't like paying to play online so I like it, and that's a good part of the reason why I hate MMORPG's

also about the price, if you like computers/video games as much as I do, the ps3 is the best choice, because as ^ said, it can run linux. so basically what I got for $500 is a new computer, which I plan to make use of very soon. I just wish it had at least 256mb more RAM because 256mb alone is pretty damn shabby nowadays

well, after having my ps3 for about a week now, I can tell you that it's one hell of a console. playing games in HD beats normal res on a standard tv or on a comp monitor. blu-ray is gorgeous too, not to mention you can store ~50GB on one freakin disc.

From an article I read on comcast's homepage a few weeks ago, according to one or more developers, XBOX360's and PS3's power are pretty much equal after all things are considered. They each had advantages in different areas, however the advantages balanced out. Apparently graphics will most likely continue to look very similar on both consoles.

I saw a PS3 for the first time a few days ago, and the graphics on some random offroad racer looked great, especially because the lighting was very realistic. Really looked like the race was happening outside in the desert. With that said, I think I noticed a ton of choppy fps, something I rarely ever notice unless it's really obvious. I tried basketball, and it looked pretty much the same as the demo I tried of the same basketball game on my 360.

I really didn't like the PS3 controller... IMO they need to put a rock in there or something, because it's wayyy too light. Feels like a toy now, something that will break easily, which is the same way the GC's horrible controller felt to me. The lack of rumbling also takes away more than the 6axis system adds IMO, and suggests that Sony added the 6axis as a last minute thing.

Wii was fun the few times I played it, but I could see it getting really old very quickly. A lot of times I felt like I'd do a motion, then the character would do a similar, set motion. That suggests to me that me doing a certain motion is the same as pressing a button on a regular controller, instead of the game really being interactive. Didn't seem like that all the time...maybe half the time. Red Steel felt horrible to me after being used to much better games like Halo2 and some other shooters. I didn't care for the control, but not considering that, multiplayer felt like a stripped down James Bond game, and graphics were far inferior to even Halo2, which isn't even a very new XBOX game. Come on, where are the details?

So IMO the order of best system to worst is XBOX360, PS3, Wii. XBOX has more of the style games I like, and graphics that are on par with PS3; PS3 has great graphics and will have plenty of good games, but the controller wasn't too great and it's really expensive, and Wii has tons of kiddy games which I don't care for, plus the Wiimote doesn't add much other than some uniqueness. Graphics are horrible relative to the rest of this generation too.

Here's my opinions about the new systems.

Wii: Wireless controler interesting but ultimatly a sales gimic to attract new users. Shame on nintendo for abandoning their base. Button Mashing rules!

360: Alright if you bought into the xbox big time. Still significantly less games then ps3. Generaly only bought to play Halo before it's on PC.

PS3:Thousands of games, blueray, and great for playstation fans. A bit pricy but that will drop.

PLAYSTATION FOR LIFE!!

(Not directed to you Dcs, you just brought up the subject)

A note about differences in processing power:

The 360 has a tri-core cpu whereas the ps3 has a Cell processor, which means that it has One PPE(Power Processing Element, basically the brain) and 7 SPE's (Synergistic Processing Element, basically 7 more cpu's, just used for different purposes). You'll see the real graphical differences once developers become more accustomed to mutli-thread programming and make better use of each system's power. This is basically the same thing with normal cpu's used in computers, just with a much more vast set of software.

I'm probably getting a Wii later, but currently it doesn't look too good, less than XBox quality graphics, no online, and no muiltiplayer fps's. (Red Steel is no fps, and at the least I heard it has control problems) It seems like the fps developers are using the wii controller as a gimmick and excuse for not having muiltiplayer. My brother got a 360 a few weeks ago, it's quite good. (dispite having a long ethernet cord run across the house and having to pay periodically for it) Haven't done much on PS3, doesn't look like there are a lot of good games out yet and the graphics aren't what everyone says they are.

Partially incorrect. The PS3 does more polygons than the others per second, however, the XBox 360 can handle more and larger/dynamic textures than the PS3. The PS3 does lighting slightly better (not as much as I thought it would) but the texturing thing bothers me.

Ive done some 3d modeling. Polygons are overrated. Look at NL. Most of those models ARENT as high poly as you think - its the texturing that rules.

So what would you rather have, lots and lots of polygons with good textures, or, lots of polygons (minus 1 lots) but insane textures? See, its in the pipelines and 360 set aside something like 3 or 4 times more bandwidth than the PS3 for textures which enables them to do more things like bumpmapping (maybe not more, but larger, more complex mapping) specular mapping, etc.

PS3 is more "powerful" but Im suprised that it lacks so much pipeline for texturing which, for a modeler, is your best friend - not polygons.

heres my 2 cents

Wii: Innovation with the worst graphics but largest library of games (virtual console, will have titles from 7 consoles)

Xbox 360: Equal in power and performance to the PS3...just $200 less. Great games and currently has the best looking and most fun game, Gears of War. Able to make the console what you want it to be. Dont want HDDVD? Dont buy the addon, dont want wifi? Dont buy the add on.

PS3: Overpriced. bluray forced onto consumers. Equal in price to the 360...for $200 more, no exclusives make the 360 more appealing.

If you get a Wii you'll have the option to play games from your childhood.
If you get the 360 you'll be able to save $200 to get some games
If you get the PS3 youll have an excellent video player that also plays games

For me it is all about the Wii, then the 360, then the PS3. I have played the PS3 on a few occasions, and I was not impressed with it one bit. I played Motor Storm and it was very choppy, and one time it even locked up on me. Unless I ready it wrong, you can't even play Bluray on 720p. You either have to have full HD or it takes it down to 480p. So basically, unless you have an insane TV, which most people don't, you can't even get the full effect of it.

The 360 is pretty cool to me. Live is great, and it is just a good all around system. It also in a reasonable price range for what you get.

The Wii, while it may not have great graphics, is awesome to play. It isn't really a gimmick like someone (who is obviously a Playstation fanboy) because the games actually use the motion sensing. 6-axix on the other hand is a gimmick. Few games use it, but yet they put it on every commercial don't they? The Wii also have free online service, and although it may not be the best, it is pretty good for something that is free. It also has the virtual console which is sweet.

I agree with what you are saying, but I was going more from the developer angle, as they control which aspects of the console (I.E, the Cell's extra cores) the game uses from the system. The PS3 is almost equal, because of the other cores, which don't all go for CPU power, but some can be used as help for the GPU and the like, but without the extra programming for command of the other cores, the Cell is not specifically aimed at graphics, and the PS3's main graphics do lack a little for having been released a year after the 360.

Wii:

Good: Very unique controller, people said it was hard to get used to but once you do it never gets old. The graphics may stink but it is still more powerful then the original Xbox (That is a fact, though I lost the website were I read that from). Games are fun and once the online games come out for it it should be great. Price is cheap.

Bad: Graphics outdated, controller straps break easily (They were recently recalled my Nintendo and will be replaced with better straps).

PS3:

Good: Games have more content, better AI and more effects. Blu-Ray player and online is free. Hard drive is removable and you can load Linux. It has a web browser, what that will come in handy for on a Console, I don't know, unless you don't have a PC.

Bad: Price is way to high. Games have poor graphics (Debate me if you want on this, but I have Gears of War and beat the game and have never seen anything better in my life, even on PC's. Even reviewers say it is the best they've seen). Your power bill will be $40 extra a year (That is a fact, Again can't find source.)

Xbox 360:

Good: Good selections of games are available. Ton's of accessories like Live camera (Playstation fans, I know it is an EyeToy copycat) and the wireless headset. Works with windows (I don't care if you say Windows stinks) and can stream video, pictures, and music off it. Graphics are great (Epic showed Microsoft what Gears of War would look like with less memory and with the current amount of memory (The Xbox 360 originally had only 256MB of memory and Microsoft increased the memory total to 512Mb because of what they saw).

Bad: Still costs $300-$400. Still has some bad games. Has backwards compatibility but doesn't support a majority of the original Xbox games (yet). The power supply is huge (Think of something big, no bigger. That is how big the power supply is.)

In my opinion, all 3 consoles are great. I have an Xbox 360, saved up for a PS3 and am trying to find a Wii. Each caters to different people; PS3 caters to hard core gamers, Wii for family gamers and for those who want something different from the hitting button scheme of playing games, and the Xbox 360 takes up the rest of the space.

For those of you who are comparing the graphics of the PS3 and Xbox 360:
http://www.gamespot.com/features/616274 ... es;title;1
This only compares games that are on both consoles.

Sorry for all the words.

what you played was probably a pretty early version of the game because I have the demo and it runs very smoothly. and they fixed the downscaling issue I think a few days after launch. Blu-ray looks spectacular in 1080i [;)]

Indeed. IMO, Textures are the most important part of 3D modeling. A good texturer can make any 3D model look good. Though with the higher poly count for the ps3, they can make more detailed building ect wich in real life tend to have a lot of edges to them, or at least well designed buildings do, anyways.

XBOX 360 2.0

This website has a picture of the new Xbox 360, there are not many differences that you can see from the outside.

Wii:
Pros- Unique gameplay, attracts non-gamers (Including those who thinks playing games are bad for you), Small, Makes a nice nightlight when you recieve "Wii-Mail" (E-mail of course), Internet (And playing flash games with Wiimote) and fun games like Rayman

Cons- Eh...breaking straps? (Haven't even come close to breaking mine yet) Hard to get Nunchuk attachments (I have 4 Wiimotes)

PS3:
Pros- Nice graphics, blu-ray (But how long will that last?) Free online service

Cons- I always seem to freeze the PS3 at the store after a whole whoppong 1 minute's worth of gameplay, Uber expensive, Shoulder buttons (L2, R2) slip out of my fingers easily, 6-Axis can't compare with the Wii's response to motion, Huge/bulky (Slightly wider than original Xbox, main focus on graphics.

XBox 360:
Pros- Nice graphics (again), Core system at a lower price tag, Halo 3,
Cons- Freezes quite often in stores, especially at launch, Pay for online services, Main focus on graphics.

Final Verdict: Graphics does enhance the game, but doesn't necessarily mean it's suddenly the best system ever. A game can have great graphics, but horrid gameplay/repetative gameplay, poor storyline, short, and so on. Better yet, let's put this into coaster style: A new B&M coaster opens up at your local park and has the largest loops ever and ultra high speeds. Like usual, the loops are the same, righ down to what order they fall in. Same idea with game consoles: Updated graphics, same thing again. I know the Wii's far from perfect as of right now as it was just launched but I'm sure things will definitely get fine tuned as time carries on...plus, look at the success already with the Wii.

im not going to go into any detailed analysis of the platforms, but heres my basic veiws after having played all three platforms.

the wii is technically the weakest, but makes up for it for having such a unique gaming experience, alrthough it would be nice to see a system like that implemented into a technically better system. the idea is great with the movement and whatnot, but the big reciever is a minus for me, as well as the fact that its just too active, sometimes gaming should be a little relaxing, but with all the games based on movement thats not what youre likely to get.

the xbox 360, standard, nothing too new about it. to me it almost doesnt really fit into the category of "next generation gaming" because there really isnt anything new about it, other than the built in wireless reciever and the interchangable HD. but i will admit alot of the games are absolutely beautiful.

the ps3, from experience outside of gamestop, tops out on my list, being as new as it is i would expect to have seen some flaws or come across something that i would have done differently, but i honestly cant. the controller is mind blowing, they make the l2 and r2 buttons spring loaded, all wireless, lighter, AND they somehow fit in a rechargable battery without changing the shape or size or anything. that to me, as compared to the other platforms' controllers, is incredible. some people have complained about the platform size, but does that really matter that much, the only thing i can think of that would make that a problem is if you move from one parents house to the others alot (if theyre divorced) but otherwise it will most likely sit in one spot and probably need dusting every once and a while. it really doesnt matter.
but anyway, on with the gaming experience, i played call of duty, ridge racer, and resistence, all good games, ridge racer was nothing special other than looking really great. call of duty had some cool little details making use of the sixaxis movement (which also ads to my liking of the ps3, you dont need a reciever, no matter where your ps3 is located in relation to the tv) but resistence was by far the most amazing game i think i have ever played in the way of shooters, it looked incredible as well as having no lag at all, and also some cool uses of the sixaxis movement.

but all in all, i think that if people didnt play favorites with the companies rather than the product, the ps3 would prevail in the end. complain all you want about the price, but if you have a job and a bank account, you'd be surprised how fast you can come up with it.

im done, hahah.

Well, since the PS3 is now widely availabe and easy to get if you have the resources to buy one, it is of course the best and most loved system out there. I guess since a lot of stores are having trouble selling their PS3's, it is a great sign that it is a GREAT system. I mean, who wouldn't want a system with only one GOOD game. Those controllers are just so innovative. They have mOTioN SenSInG OmGSS DuDE!11!!! I mean really, what an original idea! Adding motion sensing as a last minute thing. I mean, who knew that was what another company's system was about?

That Nintendo Wii..it is terrible! You can't even find one! Nintendo is aweful at keeping them in stock. (wonders why people have been camping outside of stores for nearly two months) It isn't even HD! I don't want to move when I am gaming! Why would anyone want to be put more into a game? I mean, who would want to be able to sword fight with no real risk? What a stupid idea!

The 360 is just stupid. It's not even HD. It only runs in 720p. The PS3 is in 1080p oMGZ!1!! Stewped Micrrasoft. The games just look better than anything else out there, what were they thinking? Who wants to pay $400 for a system with incredible looking games when you can pay $600 for one that plays pretty good looking games? There really isn't anything even new about it. It just brought gaming into the HD era. Naw, nothin new.

[/end sarcasm]

^You talk about people not siding with a certain company and you type up a day and half of text about how good the PS3 is. [sarcasm]I am with you. I hate fanboys![/end sarcasm]

right now the 360 and the PS3 are basically equal. and let me just say I'm not leaning one way or the other.

1- for $200 onto the price of either 360 package you get an HD player, which is already included in the ps3 and it's price (either way you get $500/$600) and you get a more powerful HD player for the same price with the PS3
2- their cpu speeds are basically the same and doesn't matter how many cores they have yet because no one's programming specifically for either one.
3- the 360 is getting a revision sometime in this new year anyway adding a 120gb hard drive, HDMI for full 1080p output and a 65nm processor as opposed to 90nm making it more efficient in terms of power and thus cooler.

along the lines of the Wii, I really think they could've done a better job if they had just gone to $300 or $350 and made it a little more powerful. I know thats one of the reasons they've always been so popular, but I mean really who wants the same old thing in new packaging? That's also why I feel bad for the millions who buy one and don't realize they're just buying a gimmick gamecube. In fact, at E3, the one's on display were hidden because they were just gamecubes with Wii remote add-ons

The graphics on the Wii are better than that of the Gamecube, and that's a fact. It's not just a gimmick. And if you don't have one, how could you even know?
