So I'm a geology major and I need help picking classes for next year. For my major aside from the ten semesters of geology courses ( get to fit this crap into 4 years), I need to take:

~One year of chemistry
~One year of biology
~Other math and comp sci crap not related to this thread

Next year for the fall semester I take mineralogy which recommends that the "Student should have basic knowledge of high school or introductory college chemistry"

So my logic is to take my year of chemistry next year while I take mineralogy and petrology (petro is second semester, petro is the study of rocks) and then take the year of biology junior year when I have to take a semester of paleontology and some other class I don't know of yet. I figure taking the chemistry would be a good idea because I need an idea of basic high school chemistry which I sorta didn't pay attention to and passed my way through (don't you love it when you realized you were shooting yourself in the foot?)

Anyways my counselor says to take the year of biology which makes no sense to me. I'm thinking to not listen to her. Anyone have an experience in this field? It makes so much more sense to take chem instead of biology but maybe someone in this field knows something I don't. Please help me.

Anything I know about biology or chemistry is extremely dangerous. Hell, I've got like 20 percent for chemistry and 95 percent for physics in my finals therefore letting me pass science with an embarrassing 58%. That might be why I'm studying software engineering know.

I can give you some advice though both subjects are hard work and it's not about just figuring out a problem like maths for example but more like an extreme amount of information you should know. And also chemistry is boring if you?????????re not interested in that crap.

Pick what fits you more:
Chemistry = atoms, reactions, oxides and reductions.
Biology = Cells, plants, well you know everything bio.

I'm asking if it's a better idea to take chemistry at the same time as mineralogy/petrology or biology like my counselor recommended. Logic says chem, but a real geologist would know better since they're gone through the schooling already and might know that although it SEEMS more logical to take chem at the same time, it might be better to bio instead because of some hidden crap I don't know yet.

EDIT; Coolbeans what field is your dad in and how far did he go? I'm guessing the oil or the mining business and that he has a PhD but I'm just wondering.

^ His specialty is hydro-geology. He doesn't make 250k a year, but he does make quite a bit, probably more then most families combined income. So it is definately a very respectable size. As for the average pay check in his office, it's probably around 60k a year which is pretty good. Geology is a good field if you enjoy that sort of thing.[:)]

As for my dad's degree's, he has a bachelor and masters in geology

My dad also reccommended that you take an introduction to geology course if you have not done so already.

This is thier crappy little website. Not much on it.

I think an Intro to Pre-Med would be your best option.

I've taken one intro course (regular) and I'm finishing up the other so I'm well on track with the major. Hydro-geology is pretty open since nobody seems to do it, especially oceanography. Oceanography is becoming kinda critical now. Anyways thanks.
