Some of you are familiar with the famous Coaster Dynamix system. Known for their Scorpion. Well I am a proud owner of one and after three months of my scorpion sitting around I decided to make this. Atlas is a cheap yet fun layout to make and watch. Usually people really kit-bash these and make RC launches but me being impatient and low on money made a rubber band launch! Pics follow and also there is a video. While I have the layout and track done, I am creating a generic station that I can use for many models.

So here are the pics!

aww.. shhhhhh.. it's sleeping right now, but RIGHT ON!!!! whoops.. did i wake it up.. perhaps you should slow down the vid.. two of the things that cannot be scaled down are gravity (works the same no matter what) and time..
dug the video...

Thanks, I wish I could scale gravity, but oh well I guess I will keep myself entertained with some more self sealing glad wrap. [dorkhat]

I am surprised that no one has found the secret to this ride that gives it it's name...

um .. does it have some sort of thing to do with resting on your shoulders when it launches? if not then no.. i don't get it..
by the way.. your luanch is better than some of the ones i saw before..why not save the money on the launch and use it to build the station.. i've thought about geting one of the wooden ones...

CD does not make sit-down trains yet but should be available by the end of the summer. Already I am placing the roof on the station. I will have an update for that tomorrow.

So you figured out a launch system that works well enough. I've been trying to think of something. I didnt know it could be as simple as what you made up. Good Job.

If anyone wants to know how I made and operate the rubberband launch just ask.

You could also do a flywheel-esque launch. Get like a Knex wheel and mount it at the end of the launch, make something that would grab the back of the train, then route a string to the two and just give the string a pull.

I have done that many times before for full on custom models. Like for a Science project I made a scale model of a shuttle loop with custom track and all. The launch was powered from a drill connected to a 5" flywheel. I didn't have enough torque or a smooth enough track so the car would jump track at the top of the loop.

But for my purposes here I will stick the the good ol' rubber band.

That cool. And does the name have to do with the twisting of the track?

No, think of who was atlas and what he did. Then look at the ride.

Arrrgh. You took my answer.

Anyway, would you mind if I used this layout as an NL track?

Sit-down trains will be coming out soon yes.

Okay now I am out of ideas. Anyone think I should do anything else to the ride? Or I am going on to my next project and this thing will be down in a week or so.

Don't worry, Credit will go to you for the layout, but I am planning to make some big changes.
