"Superman - Tower of Powers free fall."

I thought that might lighten the moment, but it didn't. Severed feet... can you imagine being at the bottom of the ride and seeing someone's feet fall right in front of you? Ugh. I'd be like ruined for life...

I'll still ride rides though, Do S&S Space Shot/Double Shot towers even have cables?

Indeed they do. It's what carries the gondola up and down the tower. It's the pressure tanks that control and handle the moving of them though (?)

Guys did you ever think about something actually have maybe gone wrong with the ride, and it wasn't her fault! I mean Shards of metal came off of TTD and it wasn't anyones fault, and there have been other accidents. A few witness said a cable snapped, and fell to the ground and when your dropping from 170 feet in the air, and a cable wraps around your feet, they are bound to get cut off. Just wait for the entire story before bashing this little girl. She lost her feet for god sake!

This is sad an all but its no reason to be more scared on these rides. This is a freak accident and this 13 year old girl was a victom of this accident. Just think of the odds of this really happening again.

How do they carry the gondola up and down the tower, I've never seen any cables on it... It's propelled up the tower with pneumatic air tanks [compressed air.] How could a cable possibly lift it up when it's compressed air thats forcing it up?

And how is it carrying it when it's falling? You're launched down by compressed air, and on S&S towers you're stopped with compressed air too... Then again though, on S&S towers the cables aren't protruding on the outside of the tower if they're even there lol, they've got trusses in front of them so if one broke this would probably never happen lol.

But on this ride, come on guys. It probably was a ride malfunction. It's a machine, but it was made by humans. Humans make mistakes. Even still it's sort of stupid for this to even be possible...

There's more info now at the WLKY site, and it sounds like the girl wasn't doing anything stupid and that this really was just a freak accident. People said the cable snapped right at the top, so that car must have just fallen then, still being stopped by the brakes (this is an Intamin drop tower, not S&S) catching the girls feet somewhere near the top. Still, I hate how the media reacts to stuff like this, stuff like:

?????????My son?????????s over there tripping out man. You want to come to a park and feel safe you know. We?????????ve got season passes. We?????????re not coming back for sure."

Oh well, shorter lines for the rest of us if people decide to freak out like that.

CNN Article:

(CNN) -- A girl's feet were cut off Thursday when a free-fall thrill ride malfunctioned at the Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom Amusement Park in Louisville, Kentucky, police said.

A cord wrapped around the 16-year-old's feet and severed them at her ankles while she was on the "Superman Tower of Power," a police dispatcher said. The girl was taken to a local hospital.

"That could have been all of us -- riding that ride," Whitney Sandfer, who witnessed the accident, told CNN affiliate WDRB/WMYO.

The incident took place shortly before 5 p.m. ET, according to Six Flags spokeswoman Wendy Goldberg. The park remained open, but the ride in question was shut down and will remain so until the full investigation is complete, Goldberg said.

During the ride, passengers are lifted to 177 feet, suspended momentarily and then dropped, according to the park's Web site.

Passengers drop 154 feet at 54 mph, stopping "just 20 terrifying feet above the pavement," it adds.

"I seen the car go up. Then, like, the cable broke, I heard -- pwchh -- and I heard a lot of people screaming," Chris Stinnett, who was at a ride next to the Superman Tower of Power, told WDRB/WMYO.

"The cable went under the car -- and I seen it pull up and hit a lot of people -- and I seen them bring their legs up," Stinnett said.

The ride was introduced in 1995.
Sometimes the best thing to say is nothing at all.

I hate to sink your ship but the S&S Space Shot/Double shots do have cables that control them...

You can see the cables attached to the car on that ride. In the center. And if you look at the sides of the tower you can see the black cable lined parallel with the tower...

Oh yeah I guess, thing is though, they're only on the top of the car, so your feet won't be severed :).

I'm still confused. How did this happen?
Did it pull her feet off?
Or tear through them?

Yeah, same for me. I keep thinking that it only hurt her feet, not cut them off, I dunno, I could be wrong.

It worked like this, or this is how i think it did. Right before the drop cable snapped and wraped around her feet. When it dropped the cable made a clean cut through her feet. Some six flags inspector is getting fired.
