I think any record he might break will have an asterisk.

Meh, I dont think so. Now I'm a hardcore dodger fan, so you KNOW I despise Bonds and the Giants. But I think he has earned it. Even if he is using steroids, that doesent give you the ability to swing and hit the ball perfectly. There is more involved than just power.

It is baseball. No one is noticing...

What i love about the critics is that they are like 'he used roids for a portion of his career, he doesn't deserve a damn thing he does'. I find it funny though because everyone who complains about Bonds is not doing two things, A) hit that many home runs, roids or not. and B) Doing it for as long as he is doing it.

Any record is impressive to break, even if you are using drugs to help you out. You're still doing it for a long time and at an tremendous pace.

Baseball needed this to be 100% roid free controversy. The sport is dying, this isn't helping.

That's bull crap. That happened once with the lock out and now it's as popular as ever. You never hear anything about baseball...

Well I can tell you one thing, I never hear about Hockey... Baseball is all over the news and always will be. If hockey is "as popular as ever" then that shows that is has never been very popular. I cant even name 10 professional hockey teams.

I think you are being a little biased to your own sport.

Funny clueless hockey fans....as for Bonds, hes a fat piece of worthless crap and is a waste of human space. Quite frankly I hope somebody cripples the overbloated twat before he hits 755. Hank Aaron was a great player and a paragon of baseball herois in every rite...Bonds is quite the contrary.

Lmfao, and you're not? I can name ten pro hockey teams easily and I HATE hockey.

Oilers
Canucks
Flames
Canadiens
Yellow Jackets
Maple Leaves
Avalanches
Senetors
Teh Ducks
Hurricanes...

It's not that hard, Hockey is as huge in Canada as soccer/football in Britain.

I don't like hockey at all, I think it's boring but it's big enough that I know that crap. Whenever I go to my cousins house it's always hockey on TV or they're watching DVDs. One of my best friends is constantly looking up hockey crap on Youtube...

Hockey is insanely popular here, but you're too conceited to see outside of your own country. Baseball is so popular in the US because it basically started there. Hockey was created in Canada by college students in Montreal...

Edit: By the way, the only baseball player I even know of is Babe Ruth, and the only reason I know about him is from the Sandlot...

I entered this thread and read your first post and had no idea what you were talking about :P

Yeah, really, American football and basket ball are the only sports that can claim to be "really alive" today. Baseball is boring to watch, anyway.

Also, I'd say hockey is more alive than baseball. Professionally, maybe not, but I see more people playing hockey recreationally than I do baseball, and I live in GA.

Okay, watch Espn for like 10 minutes and you'll see either a baseball game, or a MLB highlight. If you watch Espn in the fall, your going to watch the NFL, because its the season, in December you'll see basketball, and in the spring and summer baseball again. Its not boring to watch if you like the sport, its everybody elses attention, and if you ask me baseball gets as much publicity as football, basketball is slightly behind.
-Hockey is not popular and not nearly as close to baseballs popularity.

All new baseball records are crap. They shrunk the stadiums, screwed around with baseball design and materials, and all of the sudden everyone can hit a home run.

All it is is a gigantic enema on Babe Ruth's corpse.
"Careful man, there's a beverage here!"

Really? Or was he just in an era where his competition wasnt at the same level as him? Should we asterick his name because he didnt have pitchers throwing the kinds of balls that are thrown today? Or throw 101mph?! Come on now...

Steroids...anyone think its really helped him? I can think of several other players who prove that the game is not about how strong you are but how well you swing the bat. Of course the speed of your bat at impact helps, but anyone here play baseball or golf? Its not about how HARD you swing. Muscle strength has little to do with that. I am not a very strong person at all. Im 6ft tall and during high school I was slightly overweight. I could still hit a golf ball, straight, 310+ yards and I did it not be swinging as hard as I could.

I think this whole issue is rediculous. Why he did it? I dont know. But I dont think it made him a better hitter. Look at A Rod! Hes going to shatter the record. Ive seen a few people speculate he could hit 900. Is he that big? No! Hes just got a great home run swing and he makes good choices. That and more people pitch to him than Barry...

But some of you are ridiculous. Taking steroids for baseball would be like taking roids for gold - pointless. I cant think of many places where you would have a significant advantage. He was hitting home runs before and he was after. Plus, I would only expect him to get better as he focused more and more on his hitting and got better. Technology has come a long way and its evident by how many people can hit the long ball now just based on their technique.

Hank Aaron was special. His record is special. But he didnt have half the crap thats being thrown at these guys now. Each era is different and if anything has progressed through the years more than another its pitching. So the fact that someone can hit 500,600 or 700 home runs now IMO is more of a feat than the old records.

Very nice post Real.

I've been playing baseball since I was able to swing a bat, and I know for a fact that you don't have to swing *that* hard to send a bat a long way. Batting is so much technique and includes many things that non-players don't realize. You have to be able to control your weight, time correctly, read the pitcher and the pitches out of his hand, see the ball, make contact and handle the bat (wrists), "squash the bug", and even follow through. There are just so many factors that play into how the ball travels.

There's no absolute proof that Barry Bonds has taken steroids, and he's still hitting homeruns at the age of 43 today!! With the testing policies today in the MLB anyone that dopes gets caught, so it's not like he could still even be doing steroids.

As for A-rod, he will brake the record eventually, and I will cheer for him to do so (especially if he joins the cubs :P). He's also a perfect example of how you don't have to swing hard to hit a homer! Just watch some of his clips and you'll see.

And its funny because I dont even like baseball. but seeing as how swinging a bat and a golf club are so similar, I never see this argument. Heck, any sport which requires you to swing some object at a ball, sitting or moving requires 80-90% technique and 20-10% power. Just look at the womens golf. Majority of them have far better ball control than the men over the course of a weekend. Sure the men score a bit lower - they take more chances. But Id rather be consistantly good than super awesome one week and super crap the next.

Also as CKW said, alot of other factors have changed. But I still think back in the day, it was easier. The competition was NO where as tough. Kids are bred now just for sports by their parents. That was definatly not the case 60 years ago.

Alive... blah... Anybody would jump off a cliff with all that padding protecting you. I fell from my motorbike with less protection, and you?????????re not going to connect a guy on the field at 75mph. Try and play a really aggressive sport like Rugby and see what it means to be alive.

I am from New York originally. Hockey was always more important than baseball when I was growing up. It was just the preferred sport in our household.

Hmm... I'm probably one of the few people who really doesn't mind Barry. I'm honestly considering buying like a T-shirt with his name on it just to piss people off.
