Most sites are hosted somewhere and there is a monthly fee, but some sites do not have a fee (for example if you have your own server such as Coasters2K and Coasterfuel). RAM is a piece of a server, they do not charge you by the piece.

Freewebs sucks, period. Using Freewebs is crap and normally screams of lazy programming because it is all done for you -- and usually brings out the riducle stick. I will only speak for my site here but other Admins who read this please join in. Coasters2K was written and coded by three people, and other than the Forum structure (which came from www.snitz.com) it is all written in a programming language called ASP (Google it). Running a site is MUCH more than just tossing up some forums and calling it done -- you need to find something unique that others do not have, and that you can attract members with. It takes YEARS to grow membership and get things actively rolling. Coasters2K has only been officially back online for a year, and we are only sitting at 325 members.

Trust me on this one. If you do not have the skills in you to create a website, getting members to join will be very difficult.

piff, my site was coded by one person and then it has been worked on by I think 4 or 5 other programmers and have had help from various others. I only do minor stuff. graphical work throughout the years has been done through I'd say 6 different people as well. Lots of work has gone into this site. [:)]

But if you add screens of your own design and make it looks good, would that be better (on freewebs)?

Anything you do on your own is a plus, period, and you also learn something in the process. However, it is important to note that getting a few additional opinions PRIOR to releasing a site always helps you avoid nonsense because someone's fresh eyes will ALWAYS catch what you missed in your review of the site.

I don't think coding is very difficult if you just sit down, read through tutorials and really try to understand the concepts.

I'm no programmer myself, but in the past week I've taught myself Java, and I can now write simple programs, such as an application that will convert km/h to m/s. It doesn't seem like alot, but I'm proud of what I am able to do so far.

So give it a try, its really not that hard, there's just a LOT to learn ;)

yeah, there is a lot to learn when it comes to websites, takes years of messing around to finally know what you're doing.

If you want a free server, set up IIS on your XP Pro machine or something. Or if you don't have XP Pro, use apache.
