I find it funny how the people who say no present absolutely no argument as to why...honestly now, Id like to hear what you have to say as to why it should be 21 as it is.

I HAVE HEARD that Europeans don't go all apeshiz crazy like American's do in the college years with drinking. Why? A lower drinking age....

Again I have HEARD this not experienced it, there is a big difference.

lol!
not the case sorry!
we may not go quite as 'apeshiz crazy' as you guys. but the whole POINT of uni/college is the drinking, what with it being legal and all. so not only is it done at home, in halls and at other 'private' residences, it is done big style on the streets. literally. [lol] which is comletely legal for us students! makes uni worth going to [;)]

but i do agree...18's a round enough age to do everything if not previously isn't it? isn't 21 slightly old fashioned....sorry if that's offended anyone, but it just seems that way to me, coz all I get is 'in myyyyyy day, there was none of this out till 2am, we had to be home at a respectable hour, at least until 21' well, aren't we adults at 18 now, hence able to make 'appropriate' decisions? or is that not the case either in America?

ah well....legalise it! happens anyway [:D]

Unfortunatly an age cannot determine if you can make competant decisions.

If they lowered the drinking age to 18 it almost would matter. My friend is drinking alot and is only 13. And her friends also do it so i don't care if they do it it won't matter.

I don't really drink either (yay lemonade!), but I think that if the age were lowered to 18, then underage drinking wouldn't have to be so concealed, and therefore would be less dangerous. Basically what E-Man said on page 1.

The answer is sadly a catch 22. While the argument of turning 18 makes you legally an adult and you are allowed to do pretty much anything, one should be allowed to drink is a valid argument. But what would that do? In the short term you would have a hella lot of people technically having their "21st" birthday on the same day. Chances are DUIs and fatal accidents would increase over a short period of time and would eventually level out. With a drinking age at 18 would the exploration of alcohol transfer from college to high school? The only positive of that would act as a nice buffer of weeding out the people who would go to college, drink, and get kicked out in a semester or 2.

But in the end its probably better to just leave it at 21. While some people are mature enough to begin drinking at 18 and it won't effect their lives adversely, theres many more who aren't mature enough yet at that age.

Eh getting booze underage is easy. Just give money to your 21 year old friend and it's done. Not hard at all.

Coaster individual, high schools drink too.

Some day last year in German class, we were talking about drinking in Germany (don't remember how we got to that subject). I don't know for sure how it is in other places in Europe, but I'm guessing that it's pretty much the same; you can drink whenever, can't buy until a certain age, and the penalties for alcohol-related incidents are much more severe than in the US. It seems to work, and I do not see why we have the rules we have in the US.

If the age here is to be lowered to 18, I'd say that the only way to make sure people don't go wild with it is to enforce stricter penalties. There would have to be some way to encourage moderation and responsibility if it happened.

And as much as I'd like to be able to drink legally in 2 years' time, I have to say that I think the common mentality towards drinking in the US is so much different from the rest of the world that it just wouldn't work.

yea, just a random story, but a kid at my dance the other day had a blood alcohol reading of .36. he was only .04 off from death... crazy.
So, my friend came up to me the other day and asked if I wanted a frozen banana, and I said no, but I want a normal banana later, so... yea.

its not like any teenages obey that law now. its harder to find someone under 21 who hasnt been drunk, or at least who has tasted alcohol. i dont think it matters what they do with the drinking age. people are going to drink either way. even if the drinking age was changed to 18, there would still be younger teens drinking.

im on the who cares side. lol.
