hey, im currently looking around for a laptop for my senior year along with college. im hoping to spend around 1000 bucks on it, but i want the best bang for the money. It doesn't have to be a hardcore gaming laptop, but just something i can use for school along with rct2 and no limits, exc. any ideas?

i want to stray away from gateways, hp's, dell's, anything with all the stupid useless software on the pc already.

i like toshiba's

To be honest, why are you afraid of getting a Dell / HP laptop if all you are going to do is play Nolimits and Rollercoaster Tycoon.

Remember, you can always wipe the hard drive and do a fresh installation of Windows Vista / XP and it'll be fine.

Calaway, you don't have a clue about what you're talking about. He said he wanted to play Rollercoaster Tycoon so getting a Mac is probably the worst decision he could make.

Wrong, you can get RCT on a Mac. And if he has to he can dual boot with Windows and still have a better computer than any Toshiba...

Don't tell me I have no idea what I'm talking about.

Right, so buying a game you already have so you can use it on a Mac is justifiable.

What about all the applications his college will likely provide him with, etc ...

In all honesty, Dell make solid laptops and that'd probably be your best bet. As for the software that comes shipped with the laptop, just format the hard drive and re-install Windows XP or whatever Operating System you like.
I know you hate Windows, but it'd be a lot more convenient for him to own a Windows machine.

"Dual boot to Windows?"
"Dual boot to Windows?"
"Dual boot to Windows?"
"Dual boot to Windows?"
"Dual boot to Windows?"
"Dual boot to Windows?"
"Dual boot to Windows?"
"Dual boot to Windows?"
"Dual boot to Windows?"

Just made sure you saw that [blah]

If he dual boots he gets the best of both worlds on one computer. Then he doesn't have to re-buy anything, and he still has iLife and all the features of the Mac, and hey, if Windows BSOD's he's got OSX, right? :P

I think he should get an Apple IIe. Go back to old school where there is no RAM, no OS, and everything is on a 5-inch floppy. That way, there is no question when things go wrong and he can stop blaming the brand name for any issues he may not know how to fix. [lol]

He definitely knows all about Apple so heed knowledge, TJ and Matt!

I've seen countless numbers of family friends go off to college with a Dell in their hands and all I hear is that they're superb for the way you need a system to operate on campus. I'm agreeing with Matt because Dell notebooks are finecore.

Just don't go Gateway...

im no computer expert, but like the pre-installed programs can be removed in the add/remove hardware section??

the desktop my family has now was hand-built by a local company, so i never had to deal with unwanted software on my computers (im the only one with any computer knowledge), but this place doesn't run laptops...so im lost. Apple's are really steep for their price, especally going with a dual boot, considering im probibally going to also have to buy microsoft works, and all the other crap that'll be required for college.

HP's suck, so do gateways...i refuse to touch them.

HP does not suck. They are very good computers if you operate them right. If you're messing it up by putting filth-nasty download files on them than you have a problem. Don't blame the company for it...

i've seen so many hp's have faulty parts, like fans or power stations that blow out in no time. there mostly made of cheaper parts too, and loaded with unwanted software. prime example is my girlfriends family getting a hp desktop less then a month ago, and already having problems with it. HP's are like a boomerang coaster to me. ok at first, but then just painful...

I had my first blue screen of death in years on my new HP laptop, of course I blame the AMD processor and not HP. [lol]

Absolutely, there's also a program called the "PC Decrapifier" and it basically removes all the programs that came with the computer.

You can see it here : http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/home

I have an HP notebook. It's a dv9535nr, and I bought it at best buy. It's my first notebook from HP, but my third HP computer altogether. So far, i'm liking it. Took about 5 minutes in the add/remove program window to remove all the unnecessary crap. My previous notebook was a toshiba, and it was good too. I've never owned a Dell, but I use them at work. Can't say that I'm really impressed with their computers over HP or Toshiba.

If you won't go back [LAME] then don't go Gateway. I have my computer sitting oin a laptop cooler, because otherwise it will melt the coasting on my desk from the intense heat, I tried to watch a DVD with it on my lap and it got so hot that I went and brought the cooler with me.

I got it cleaned, that's not the problem. It has a faulty processor- the main speed jumps everywhere and it is making the computer work far harder than it should be.

Plus I think this is one of the laptops that Gateway released with batterys that were recalled- but just for customer service it apparently needs to know the EXACT date when you bought it, I got this laptop as a gift and I have no idea so I can't even get help from them.

Save your soul, don't go Gateway.

I'd say Macbook Pro>Macbook>Toshiba>HP>Dell>Everything Else -1>Gateway [:)]
