In all honesty, Dell make solid laptops and that'd probably be your best bet. As for the software that comes shipped with the laptop, just format the hard drive and re-install Windows XP or whatever Operating System you like.
I know you hate Windows, but it'd be a lot more convenient for him to own a Windows machine.

If he dual boots he gets the best of both worlds on one computer. Then he doesn't have to re-buy anything, and he still has iLife and all the features of the Mac, and hey, if Windows BSOD's he's got OSX, right?
