I would call those both rock bands, though I guess Slipknot does have some metal influences, I still wouldn't call them a metal band at all. I also have to second that YEAH KING CRIMSON! Good stuff.

Slipknot and Linkin Park are Nu-Metal I think. They kind of fall in between alternative and metal. Whatever happened to Slipknot anyway?
