An article posted today from an Illinois paper:

** Start **

A Moment of Silence

Effective immediately, Illinois state lawmakers have voted to override Gov. Rod Blagojevich's veto of a bill that will require public schools to allow students to have a brief moment of silence at the start of classes.

Sen. Kimberly Lightford, chairman of the Senate Education Committee, found in visiting schools in her district that some teachers provided students with a moment of school silence and others didn't, which led her to consider making it mandatory for all. Rep. Lou Lang, who voted against the measure, said that only preachers, priests and rabbis lobbied him on the bill.

The law does not contain any penalties for students who do not comply or for teachers who don't adhere to it. Educators are predicting problems in how teachers and administrators will enforce the mandate with students who ignore it.

Proponents of the law say it is just meant to allow teachers and students to reflect on and prepare for the coming school day and has nothing to do with religion.

** End **

Interesting -- the senate voted to overturn the Governor ... seems more than just a few folks might have been in favor of this one.

No penalties at least. I doubt this will be enforced at all with no penalties.

To enforce penalties would be to enforce a dictatorship ... of course, peer pressure is a wonderful thing, but I doubt we would be talking about any kind of "civil penalties". If so, THEN you could bring a valid complaint and I would jump on board with you in agreement.

1. none are 30 seconds long, that'd be crazy.
2. they spend longer then that calling students to the office, or announcing when sporting events are
3. im usually 30 seconds late to a class daily anyway
4. 10 seconds a day, 180 days a year = 1800 seconds, half an hour..woohoo....
4a. you can't tell me that teachers don't spend 30 seconds a day doing nothing, because they do checking their email or trying to learn these new smartboards that we have in our school.
5. lets get rid of fire drills since they take up time
6. how about eliminating pep rallys and other assembelies
7. who really wants to study in school anyway?

1. They want longer than 30 seconds.
2. Announcements are not factored into class time.
3. If you're usually 30 seconds late then you should wake up earlier.
4. Yeah adding more the pile is awesome.
5. You're being dumb.
6. School is extended to factor those in.
7. IDK last I checked I kinda wanted a job outside of a factory so I'd like to study in school.

each class is a certain lenght long, ours are 49 mins. Announcements occur during them, thus they have to be factored into classtime. I dont get how school is extended, we have only i think 85 days of Pd. 13 due to assembelies while we still have 90 Pd. 3's or such, and some assembelies are seniors only, so the school day isn't extended to factor them in

what's wrong with extending a day 10 seconds for a moment of silence?

Although I don't think I probably qualify to post in this as it's nothing to with me, heh, I really fail to see how a small period of contemplation in a lesson, whatever it's for, could be anything but a good thing. I know that during my primary school time, we definitely had periods of time in some lessons to just simply sit and think, whether that be for prayer, reflection or just plain thinking. I genuinely can't see how anyone could think this is a bad thing... if nothing but to help calm kids down, even for a little while! heh.

Ah but then explain why our averages are like 12 times higher than yours.

[r]

And announcements ARE during class times here, and the classes are 57 minutes long. Assemblies do NOT extend the school day.

What are you on?

The Bible Belt, and mostly anything that borders Mexico. That is the reason why.

That makes no sense Matt. If kids apply themselves, then they do well. I got two kids in school right now who are busting their tails in the Alabama school system despite morons who cannot write a textbook to save their lives. However, I went through the New York school system and the "bible belt" logic does not add or take away from this one. It is merely application and effort, IMO.
