The new family coaster will be Indiana Beach??????s sixth roller coaster and its first to take riders upside-down.

Readers of Indiana Beach's popular blog "View From The Crow's Nest"(www.IndianaBeach.com/blog) were the first to learn of the new attraction. The Amusement Resort had been hinting about the new coaster for weeks and announced the name and ride details to its readers on Monday, November 26, 2007.

Steel Hawg, which will rise 96 feet above ground and feature a 120????? first drop along with multiple inversions, will be designed and constructed by ride manufacturer S & S Worldwide, Inc. of Logan, Utah. The company also produced Indiana Beach??????s popular Double Shot tower ride and its Frog Hopper kiddie ride. ??????We??????ve had an excellent relationship with S & S over the years and we??????re looking forward to continuing that relationship with Steel Hawg,?????? stated Spackman. ??????The coaster will be a very distinctive ride with tight turns, 90????? banks, inversions, and one-of-a-kind elements. However, with a height limit of 48 inches, it??????s also a ride designed for families to enjoy together."

One of the largest ride investments in Indiana Beach??????s history, Steel Hawg will be located on the north side of the park near the popular Hoosier Hurricane and Rocky??????s Rapids Log Flume rides. Steel Hawg is scheduled to deliver its unique coaster experience in mid-May.

Looks like I'll be taking another trip to IB next year! That 120 degree first drop is certainly one-of-a-kind.

Word has it that the coaster won't be an exact clone of the El Loco ride.

I wonder if Hersheypark knows that Steel Hawg will exceed their Farenheit coaster's first drop by 23 degrees?

I still don't understand how the drop is 120 degrees.

I wouldn't put it past them...That's some serious math, but I hear Hersheypark has a few smart people in the staff?

IMO the steepest drop possible is 90*...how can you get steeper than straight down? All that advertising about the steepest drop in the world doesn't make sense to me.

I've always wondered the same thing, especially since S&S has their "180 degree drops" on screaming squirrels. If I made a coaster with a 190 degree drop (same as a 180 but ended sloping up a little) could you say it was steeper than the other one?

No, because after 179 degrees it fails to be a drop anymore.

El Loco! doesn't look like it has a 120* first drop, the "drop looks like a half loop. What's going on?

^The drop slopes down to a 120* angle and then bottoms out. It isn't half a loop, it's just a drop with an extreme angle. Technically, 90* is the steepest a drop can be, because if you go beyond 90, it can be measured as less than 90 from the opposite direction.

That may be correct from a geometry stand point but, in engineering, the angle is measured from the start point to the point where the angle begins to reverse itself. You don't arbitrarily asign a point where you begin measuring from another angle.

no i think anything over 150 degrees including drops is counted as an inversion

that ride looks so amazingly painful. I like that downward barrel roll though. It looks fun, but extremely painful.

The drop looks fun, but the element after that to me would be painful, unless what I'm seeing on the crest of the drop is a holding break of some kind.
