So Apple released yesterday the new MacBook air. The world thinnest notebook. They made it seem all great and dandy. Well to tell you the truth, im not that impressed. Its the same size screen as a MacBook which does more that what the Air can do. I dont like the fact that their in so External drive and the fact that their is one USB port. Apple posted on the Air page this quote

"In redefining thin, MacBook Air has shed something you no longer need: the optical drive. That?????????s because MacBook Air is built for the wireless world. So instead of watching DVDs, you can rent movies wirelessly from the iTunes Store."

So I cant use any of my DVD's unless I use the CD/DVD transfer with another computer. Im dont want to spend $5 on a video I have 24 hours to watch. For $5 you cant rent a movie for a week at Blockbuster.

Another biggy........... ITS WAY TO MUCH!!

So what are everyone elses thoughts on this?

Its not the worlds thinnest. Their advertising a lie, World's thinnest is made by sony at .74 inches at it's thckest point. Apple has an excellent maketing group and that's what's making them get lots of attention. They spend lots on marketing which has been doing good for them. But yeah, you get no cd drive in that macbook [:)] Just another ploy of them to get you to get into itunes and spend even more money.

if you can afford it, and are willing to accept that it's limits in what it can do are made up for in portability, and that you will never be upgrading it, and will trying disparately to sell it (or throwing it away) when it is completly obsolete in a year then go for it.. if i had a disposable income i would.. oh wait, no i wouldn't i refuse to buy a wireless plan...

IT is sexy I admit that, but the price is WAAAAAAAAY over. I would pay maybe $600 for it. No where near $1800.

Seems pretty pointless to me, why would you pay so much more for a computer that is slower and has less space than the regular macbook just because it's thinner? And it doesn't even have a cd drive...?

Even though I dont care for MACs I must say that this is a nice laptop. But since I just dropped $700 to get my HP sent back to there repair place to fix many issues with it. And yes, these errors are with the computer, not the OS so I dont want to hear it from MAC fanboys/girls. $1800 is not a bad price for it though. Most desktops that are any good go for much higher then that as do many laptops. IMO its really on the cheaper side.

If you truly need a very light laptop, with no real concern from performance other than office tasks, I would say it's a good buy.

Pretty soon laptops will be as thin as a stick of pencil lead, fit in your pocket, and only show one of three choice Ocean Waves backgrounds!

$2,500,000. Think Macintosh!

lacking a cd drive really? that takes away from the appeal of having a Solid State Hard drive on the thing.

I haven't used a disc on my computer for a VERY long time. This would suit me pretty well if I had the money.

While I'm neutral about the new MacBook Air, I do believe that, for its price, it is quite competitive with other laptops in its ultraportable category. If you look at CNET (http://reviews.cnet.com/4566-3121_7-0.h ... _14553660_) computers in the same range as the MacBook Air (80 GB Hard Drive, 2 GB Ram, No CD/DVD Drive, 13.3 inch screen, etc.) are VERY similarly priced.

So while the MacBook Air is not for most people, it cannot be said that it is just too expensive. Macs are generally more expensive than PC's, but here we have a Mac in the perfect range. Just because this laptop wouldn't suit your needs, doesn't mean that its a horrible thing.

I'm not an apple fanboy. But everyone was saying how the MacBook Air is WAAAYYYY overpriced, when its similar in price to other computers in its category with similar features. Thats all.

^so you need another not-so-portable-computer with discdrive, which makes the whole Mac-ultra-portable concept sound like crap, no?
