i like t rex.. in fact i recommend it
not "overly-virtuostic" ,but really interesting guitar, great voice never whiny, and never fake... songs are catchy as hell, but not annoyinly so at all, uhm.. the setup is pretty interesting as almost every song has hand percussion along with regular drummer, but not in some dumbass phish kind of way, so the rythms arent anything complicated but the drums are interesting enought to be noteable..and i love t rex
they'd fit the description of what you asked for

ok then, make a video of yourself preforming a 29/8 time signature... i'll do it if u dont believe i can...

tool has talent, more than you could notice probably...

although, there bassist and guitarist suck... maynard has more balls than any singer out there tho, and daney carry is simply a god...

Tool is NOT SPECIAL by means whatsoever. You want complicated time signatures? Listen to a song called "Sensemaya". It's in the Sin City movie when the yellow bastard appears and is driving.

5.5/8 time. Yes you read that right. 5 and one half eight time. And that's only for part of the song, the rest of it switches around measures and it was an unholy bastard to play. If a bunch of high schools can do that, it's not something horribly special.

They're a bunch of snobby buttheads that are in dire need a reality check.

the guitar effects.. isolated instances any ways , are the only thing i can even remotely appreciate about that group.. the singer sounds like "i hope my voice and music bugs the living crap out of your parents, got pubes yet?"

Beyonce knows music.

oh becuase bad singing to a pre-recoreded (probably not even her own) beat is music...In fact she probably didn't even write the vocals...she probably does'nt even really sing at her concerts. Shes a figure of someone elses music.

back on topic:

also try

Flogging Molly
Franz Ferdinand
Modest Mouse
Interpol
Led Zeppelin (im surprised no one said them yet)

5.5/8? who cares.... i think tool is creative, and i dont think its right to diss a band because they try things. i like every kind of music. if a singer/band is true with there music, and they put there heart to it, they're cool with me.

I diss them because they try something, suck ass at it, and then use Apple marketing strategies to pass themselves off as a godly revolutionizing movement of elite quality when they're everything but that.

Like I said earlier they're the annoying music dork everyone hated in school that was always showing off pointless embouchure builders and playing horribly complex "music" that sounded like crap. Give them something dramatic to play and they crap out right away.

I agree with most of this:

^Just to play devil's advocate, and because I'm a brass player, is there really such a thing as a pointless embouchure builder? As long as you're playing with good technique, hard exercises are really useful. I'm sure some people think I do octave slurs and range extensions to "show off," but the truth is I need that stuff to get a good warm-up. Right now I'm practicing a neoclassical piano piece that has uncommon metric and mode shifts, but I don't play it because of those things and their difficulty; I play because it's good, exciting music. In high school I could've been considered "that music dork," even if I was better at math than music. The only time everyone hated me was when a buddy and I won a talent show by improvising an entire act (and because we were white, but that's a long story).

However, none of this is to say that I excuse Tool from being a bunch of pretentious failures.

The Locust, isn't that the band that wants to "destroy all music" or something like that?

BTW, on the topic of off time signatures and complex playing; check out Dillinger Escape Plan or PsyOpus. DEP's older stuff was like constant guitar scales and horrifyingly fast pick sweeps/finger tap solos along with rapid fire drumming.

And then there's PsyOpus's guitarist who does nearly ALL fingertapping throughout the song. It sounds like Van Halen's 'Eruption' only more spastic and death metal-like. Some might dispute as to whether these bands produce real music or just noise but it's hard to deny the technical expertise of both bands. Personally I love em' both!

i was joking, i see no reason for people to listen to the locusts, and i've told them this personally on more than one occasion.. but they sure are fun..

ok i think i will seriously offer some suggestions instead of being an elitist jack ass.
if you like guitar that sounds good but not pretentious or masturabatory i'd offer the first couple of white stripes albums...
if you want mellow music and really unique musicianship look up blackheart procession..
i seriously don't like much new music but i'd say you couldn't go wrong with radiohead.. wether on not i'm into them (which i'm not) isnt important, i think they are probabally the best band of the last 15 years
jimmy yoshi's suggestions are wonderful..anything by the pixies and the flaming lips is awesome.. while i'm at it i'll throw in the breeders.
now for some personal favorites of mine that i'll throw out there
spiritualized spacemen 3and everything related
yo la tengo
stereolab
the lilys
the brianjonestown massacre
mc 5
the stooges
the flamin groovies
sonic youth..
my bloody valentine..
ride
i dunno.. these bands might not piss off your parents or impress the other kids at school but its good stuff..

3. Boston ????????? More Than A Feeling
A number of you are probably thinking ?????????hey, come on, I kinda like that song.????????? Yes, everyone kind of likes that song, which is the source of its horrible insidious power. This is the musical equivalent of McDonalds: it's designed to be packed with so much artificial crap that it's bound to appeal in some way to just about anyone. It's got more overdubs than My Bloody Valentine and more sap than a bottle of Mrs. Butterworth?????????s. No matter how musically credible you are, no matter how much cutting-edge indie rock you listen to, no matter how good in bed you are, this song is your secret shame. It is the song that makes you uncool.

LMAO. I hate that song so much, but everytime it's playing, I have to sing along.
