Yeah, that always happens with sketchup, you need to put it into another 3d's program such as 3d's max, and then export it into .3ds

Technically the issue is that Sketchup sets the ambient color of your textures to black, which NL thinks means there's no light on your textures.

To fix it you need to set the ambient color to white, which you can't do in Sketchup. Some people use Anim8or to do this, with Anim8or you can import the 3DS, edit the textures and set the ambient colors correctly, then re-export to 3DS.

It's a pain but it's said to work (I don't have Sketchup pro, so I've never tried it myself).

Anim8or is free, you can google it. You can probably use trueSpace to do it too and its free. Anim8or doesn't seem to want to run on my new laptop so I'm using trueSpace instead for these little tasks.

If you can grasp Sketchup, neither Anim8or nor trueSpace should pose much of a challenge to you. (Though if you choose to try trueSpace I can help you find the 3DS importer, it's not obvious).

Cool.

So to import 3DS files into trueSpace you need to do this:

trueSpace has two work environments, in the upper left hand corner are a number of tabs the lower two of which are Workspace and Model, in order to get to the menu we want you have to be in Model mode. While in model mode a new menu button appears to the far right of the Model tab (on the same bar) which says "TS6 Files", click on that, then select Load and then Object. The load dialog that opens includes Binary 3DS as a file-type it understands.

Apparently the developers of trueSpace are trying to retire this functionality, however they realize people still find it useful so they keep it around, just hidden. Why they want to retire functionality people find useful is another question.

Then try saving it back out and see how it looks.

Sorry that wasn't able to fix it. Could you send me the file too? I'd like to see if I can find a solution outside of 3ds max for everyone else who runs into this and can't get Anim8or to work, an increesing number of us from what I can tell.

Hopefully the guy making Anim8or is going to get a new version out soon.
