Suggest A New Laptop For me

Basically my HP Pavillion dv2415nr Notebook has bitten the last of my nerves and is ready to be topssed out.

Suggest the best laptop in terms of durability. I use a laptop 6 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is no way around this for me since all my school work, and money making work is done off a laptop. So I need one that can withstand long hours. I don't care about battery life, I have it plugged in all the time I am using it. I don't use graphics extensive programs, well other than Photoshop which I use it to make small graphics. A good graphics card would be nice but is not required since I don't play games on a notebook or PC. I need something with speed, that can boot up quickly and load programs quickly. Draft N capability is a big + but as long as g is there then I am fine. Budget is no more $800 plus tax. ($866)

-No AMD laptops whatsoever. AMD is the worst possible chip ever made. If you suggest an AMD laptop, consider yourself banned
-Same goes for those who suggest an apple machintosh laptop.
-Suggest only windows and strictly Intel.

Do not go Gateway, mine is half a year old and the test of time is really showing on it. Those Dell Studio laptops are VERY nice, and their chassis are very strong.

Get a Toshiba Satellite. I am SOOO glad I switched from HP to Toshiba.

I've had Toshiba Satellite before and well, I owned it for 5 years or so and I never came close to using it as this one. But when I did, it was good. I'll give them a look.

Mac is a no because it simple can't do what I do on a PC, don't ask questions. [;)]

I persoanlly hate Toshiba due to there poor quality of touchpads and mouse clickers. (Yes, that is a technical term.) I have no beef with HP they are the #1 laptop. I do not know what you guys have against them.

I'd go either Dell or Lenovo. Both are widely used by students and business people and both are good quality. Dell has better *value* laptops if you're on a budget, but Lenovo ThinkPads are basically made for heavy use since they're designed for business people and are still generally affordable.

Of course, if you need a durable laptop, the obvious choice is a ToughBook... some of which are water proof.

I've never had any problems with Dell. I think they're the best laptop manufacturers. My mom has a dell laptop from 2001 that we use just as much as the 2007 XP desktop and it works fine.

Either of these would work nice. The more expensive one comes with better processor, better bus speed, more battery life and a nicer screen plus a few other things. 9600m gt too.

How big of a screen do you want? Because those Asus laptops have about 13inch screens and are pretty nice.

Laptops are my bread and butter, both my work and play in mobile form. Without it I would be dead in the water.

My in-laws don't need such a workhorse but they've gone through 3 HP's in 3 years. They and Dell are fine if you don't need a reliable workhorse and you're ok with replacing it every year or so.

I've had a Dell, it had to go back twice and eventually the ATI video card fried, now it's a media server sitting under a desk in the den. I believe it was made by Compal.

I had an ASUS which was a great machine but I didn't spring for one of the expensive ones with the metal frames (I got an a8js) so eventually the flexible case caused the motherboard to short out. Now it's in a box waiting to be sent in for repair.

I personally fully stand behind Lenovo. I have 3 ThinkPads spanning back to the late 1990s (all branded IBM but made by Lenovo) sitting in my den which still work, I can't say that for any other brand I've tried (though I do have an Apple 170 from 1991 that still works, but they didn't make their own laptops back then either). I'm absolutely in love with my ThinkPad T61p (which apparently they don't sell anymore), it's a solid and reliable powerhouse for work and I can play Crysis on it. The ThinkPads aren't cheep though. While I've never owned a laptop from their IdeaPad line myself the IdeaPad Y530 is in your price range and people really seem to like them.

If you're on a budget and have good eyesight, I'd recommend one of the new "Netbook" genre of laptops. They're incredibly inexpensive and can cover all the basics very well. Just about every one of em uses an Intel Atom cpu. The only problem is that they're not the best for serious workloads, so I don't know if they'd suit your needs. The original Asus Eee PC was a pos, but they've improved so much then. Screen sizes are bigger, trackpads are better, keyboads are finally decent, and you can get either an SSD or a typical HDD. I've heard good things about the MSI Wind series.

I would avoid netbooks for heavy use like you're describing though for a few reasons. Namely the usually poor battery life, the cramped keyboards that most of them have, most don't have a optical drive, and limited specs. For your $800 budget, you can afford MUCH better specs than any current netbook can offer you. They're really only good if all you're going to do is surf the internet and maybe type up a draft.


Another option you might want to look at is getting a refurbished system. I got my Dell refurbished a little over a year ago and it still works just as well as it did then. You usually save a couple hundred dollars so more would fit into your budget and they are tested, wiped, and fixed before shipping, but it just depends on if you're okay with not buying factory fresh.

Buy a nice shiny desktop and put wheels on it.
