Hi!

I was replacing the t-handle on a garage door and while I went to buy the replacement t-handle, someone closed the garage door. [:(!]

This is a garage door that auto locks itself when it is closed. It is a spring lock type door that when pulled down it springs the things on each side of the door and you can't pull it up. I think it's called a tension cord lock. Well, now I am outside the garage door with no way to get into it. There's the tiny windows at the top that I guess I could break and try and find something to pull the tension cord and see if I can pull it enough to release the locks but I don't want to break anything.

Do you guys know how could I go about by opening this door other than breaking of the small windows to stick something in and pull the cabling?

Thank you.

take the little cover thingy off the lock bolt an there oughta be some sort of manual release (like find a way to pull the bolt out of the hole in the track). then you oughta be able to push it manualy or use the cranky thing if its a automatic door.
actually i don't know.. i just made that all up,and i just realized you're outside

Can you put the handle back on? Is there a square hole inside the handle mechanism that you can turn?

there's no cover thingy. The thandle is in my hands which has the keyhole which i the lock. There is no manual release. It is not an electric motor garage door. It's a manual roll up door.

I think I am going to have to break the window, get a stick with hook and pull the tension cord, to which the t-handle was attachted to, and see if it will pull open the latches or whatever it is spring closing on the sides of the door.

oh yeah.. duhr
get your socket set and stick a 3/8 (or what ever size the shaft onthe new handle is).extension in the hole and open the lock with your ratchet.
or like forny said, just install the new one or reinstall the old one or just stick a big flat blade screwdriver in there and twist

I found this picture on google.

So I took out the center part which is where you stick the key in and lock the thing. When unlocked that center thing has a handle on the outside which you turn to the right, thus pulling the two cord you see in the picture to the opposite sides and pulling the latches, on the sides of the door, up, thus releasing the door and can slide the door up. With the center thing taken out, as is not, that cord is dangling further down than the hole so I can't just stick the part in and turn it. It wont catch on and turn the cord. So that's the best I can explain it.

right, if you took out the center part where you stuck the key in now you can stick anything you want in there and open it.

Ok, so the center part is gone, so the cords are hanging loosely too far down to reach with stuff to turn it. And in order to open it, you need to turn it to pull both sides away from the center...I can't think of anything that could really do that...

You should have used a bull doser. Then just stick to giant pieces of wood up for your door.

Chainsaw. Worked when some drunk cadillac driver roared into our garage.
