Europeans, Asians, Africans, Indians, etc DO NOT GIVE THIS AWAY!

I realized something while TAing a lab today and I have a question. How many Americans HONESTLY cannot figure out how to measure centimeters with a ruler like the one shown if the top line with the bigger spaces between numbers is labeled "in" and the bottom is labeled "mm". These kids could not understand how many centimeters were between each number labeled on the ruler.

At LEAST half of a college level introductory science class could not understand how to read a ruler to measure something on a map in centimeters.

No you guys don't get my question.

The ruler HAS centimeters.

How many centimeters are there between each number. IE between "1" and "2" are there 10 centimeters, "an inch maybe", or 1 centimenter?

I'll give you a hint, a meter equals 1000 millimeters...

To be honest its a little rough.... I had to "think" CM because everything on Millennium Force's controls is measured in CM.

Well, I would hope that most people knew that 10 mm are in one cm...But I'm Canadian, maybe that makes a difference, aha.

Dunno, if I'm sipposed to post here, judging by the title [lol] but it works the other way too; even though Imperial originally the British measurement system, I struggle to grasp it, because once you've got used to using metric, imperial just looks like gobbledigook! [lol]

I work with both measurement systems everyday, I would have thought by now that my grasp of the Imperial system would be better, but it's not, I still have to get Invetor to do most of the stuff for me! [lol]

90% of these people are construction management majors that are required to take geology 100. They're mostly very "DUUUURRRRRR" though.

I can understand if high school kids dont understand this stuff by now, but in college there is no excuse. Its soo much easier to understand metric than imperial anyhow.

I learned it as King Henry Doesn't Mind Drink Chocolate Milk.

K H D M D C M

For those of you who don't know how the metric system works, PAY ATTENTION!!

The Metric system is a decimal based system. Here's what that means:

Prefix and Definition (expressed in base units)
Kilo- =1000 base units
Hecta-=100 base units
Deca- =10 base units
(Base unit)=1 base unit
Deci- =1/10 of base unit
Centi-=1/100 of base unit
Milli-=1/1000 of base unit

Examples:

1 meter = 1,000 millimeters
1 Kilometer = 1,000 meters
1 Kilometer = 1,000,000 millimeters
1 millimeter = 0.001 meters
1 Millimeter = 0.000001 Kilometers

It's that simple!

To all USA residents. A cube of water 10mm^3 or 1cm^3 weighs exactly 1 gram and is 1 milliliter of water. Which can be described as the bare root of where the metric unit system comes from.

It works even better with decimeters, where 1 dm^3 = 1 liter.

And not only these simple conversiosn make the metric system easier to use. In mechanics and phycics most units used in force, pressure, velocity, acceleration and what-not are 1-to-1 convertable and thus very easy to use when making calculations.

I think I would shoot myself if I had to do force vector calculus using Imperial units only. [xx(]

Compared to metric, imperial units seem extremely random and inefficient. I mean, who the hell decided 1 mile = 5280 ft!
