Are There Green People Here?

Are any of you people active in the green movement? You know living green? If so, I have a couple questions to ask as part of niche research. Just a couple, I promise.

I take public transport to school every day. Because it's free and a car is expensive.

I have all three of my consoles on at the same time constantly on a massive plasma tv with all the lights in my house on full so I can see my laptop properly, while I'm in the house. While I'm out of the house I constantly drive everywhere in second gear at 5500RPM to use as much fuel as possible! Green enough?

nah.

I drive a pretty economical car, pretty economically, I'm disappointed if I get anything less than 55mpg, I try for more like 60-65mpg. Which isn't bad for a petrol engine, admitedly it's not great either but...

I do like to think I'm "green" but I can promise you that I really really am not.

See? Yeah, I'm green. Too bad I'm not blue, though. Then I could sing that annoying "da ba dee" song all day...

i drive a car that leaks more oil than america uses in a year, i fart as much methane as 10 cows, i use RC cars wich produce all sorts of nasty chemicals, i own and run alot of petrol ones too, i like to trim my nails with a pertol strimmer, i love burning things, i dont walk anywhere as im a lazy git and i run every electronic amunity i have all at once in the middle of the day. im not green and do i care, HELL NO!!!!!!!!!!

its not yet been fully proven its human beings fault that the earth is heating up and were stil coming out of the last ice age so will i ever be green NO

Yeah i agree with gazag. I saw somewhere (the place escapes my mind) that the earth will naturally go through a period or cold then a period of heat and back again.

Haha 14, but I am convincing my parents to get solar panels for my house, and bought all CFL light bulbs for my house too. I always try to take short showers, and recycle, this summer I'm starting composting and grow my own vegetables in my garden.

Sorry for double posting but I disagree 100% that's an excuse. Sure the earth cools and warms naturally, but thats because of excess NATURAL carbon dioxide excretion. We are adding millions of tonnes more that aren't natural http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... arison.png we are WAY warmer than we were in the "medieveal warm period" which has been the warmest period in several thousand years.

Also for the need of taking care of our environment the situation is actually quite urgent. Us canadians and americans eat through so much resources we use 4 times as much as other nations. We have reached the earth's carrying capacity and from now on the earth will not be able to sustain our populations.

If you really think you're going to make an appreciable impact as an individual, I'd love to know how. The greens seem to be pushing a boatload of poorly-conceived ideas into the mainstream, and the issue is that most people seem to lack the engineering skills to ask the obvious questions.

I'm partly an environmentalist, and as such I am certainly NOT green, especially when it comes to the wind/solar fairytale.

What do you mean fairy tale solar energy is the most abundant form of energy on earth. In one day the sun gives off more usable energy than of all the oil deposits on earth. Wind power is also very abundant clean, efficient, and cost effective. Burning fuel to create heat to power a turbine seems like such a waste when we can use readily available resources and skip the extraction, burning, and capture of the gases given off.

If you think about it how can not being green be the right thing to do. Being environmentally conscious = Saving energy, Saving Money, Not wasting resources, living with the earth and not fighting to take control of it. And knowing that the earth will be able to sustain us for years to come. Knowing we have clean air to breathe, clean water to drink... If you want the opposite of any of that you are wasteful and selfish. I hate when people laugh it off and say, "I leave my appliances on all the time Hahaha". It's not a laughing matter, your wasting precious energy, and wasting your own money... People just aren't intelligent when it comes to these matters. Humans tend to think all resources were put on this earth for our usage, and that is just WRONG. I'm 14 and I understand these concepts quite clearly. The oil companies control alot of things in this world, and you can still see through many "green washing" products. One is the Chevy volt, what a fantastic idea, you plug your car in and it goes places for you. MUCH cheaper than gas, much more safe etc. But we had this technology in the 90's and the first electric car sold went 3 times that of the "new" chevy volt. And the chevy volt still takes gas! Our reliance on burning fossil fuels for everything must end.

Show me your numbers and I'll show you mine. Peak outputs don't count when you have large variance, and keep costs in mind. Also, remember spinning reserve, because that's the reason that most renewable sources (except for hydro) lead to more natural gas and coal burning.

And yes, I do realize that the sun gives off a LOT of energy, but I also realize that that statistic is irrelevant.

Spinning reserves required doesn't mean that a fossil fuel power station has to burn even close to as much fossil fuel as it would have to if there were more windmills around. How is the fact that the sun gives off alot of energy irrelevant. To meet global energy demands we would only have to use 0.3% of the earths land in wind farms to power the entire world. It's a viable source of energy. Wind power is also becoming even more viable considering new designs which fit onto roof tops and vertical axis windmills which don't have a maximum rotational speed. Imagine if businesses invested in producing there own energy with solar panels and residential windmills.

You(as in everybody) can create their own home solar panels and wind turbines. ALl the parts are readily available online. You can also get batteries for free to store the energy. There is no need to resort to companies to do it for you. They charge an arm and a leg for it when one can do it themselves.

Sorry if this topic turning is turning into a debate. I am merely doing some small marketing research and gauging my target market.

^Sorry, Oscar, it's just a pet peeve of mine. People eat up these bogus numbers and misleading statistics, and it lies way too close to my field of study to just let it slide. The onus is on the greens to describe how exactly they plan on skirting the laws of physics so neatly. One rhetorical question, and that's the last bit of trouble I'll cause:

Why is it that Germany, poster child of wind energy, is planning 25-GW-worth of new coal plants?

Regardless of the fact of which country is doing what. The fact is we rely on non renewable resources to be burnt in order to create electricity, this creates pollution.Renewable energy on the other hand is readily available and even so with it's little problems, it's still relatively new technology. You're telling me as a civilization we can't fix these things? We're not smart enough or concerned enough to actually use renewable energy at its full potential? Obama just stated by 2020 America has the capacity to produce 20% of its electricity from renewable resources... It's just a pet peeve of mine when people find it easier to live with the way society is then to advance, and find a better way of living.
