I'm going to be doing a beginner gliding course at one of the airfields near where I live. Basically our school hosts a cadet thing for both the RAF and Army and since I am in the RAF one I get the opportunity to go for a lesson once a week. I was wondering if anybody else has done this kind of thing before and if it's any good?
Well, I can safely say, gliding is one of the best experiences EVER! We did a few fairly short flights where you had the basics explained and did some pitching and turning. There was a winch to get you up in the air and damn was it fun. Though it wasn't nearly as powerful as a LIM type launch it sure felt like it was due to you being in this tiny little plane. I also kept getting the fright of my life when the instructor guy dropped the plane and then when he decided to do a stall I was like [shocked]WTF!!!! Oh well, it was an awesome experience and I can't wait to do it again. I seriously recommend any of you to try and get this done somewhere since it's such a fantastic experience
I live near RAF Cosford and there is gliders in the air not far from my house, almost constantly . In fact, the only time there isn't is when the RAF Cosford Air Show is on, once a year.
I believe the glider was a Grob Viking and as to the airfield... I can't really remember [:P] It's somewhere up in Scotland though. I went down to Cosford for one of the camps by the way. The base is pretty good.
