You should check out Blender or if you have the cash, Maya. I'm only just starting to get into 3D modeling myself but I've heard that these are pretty good.(especially Maya. Though it costs something like $3000)

go blender. its plenty powerful for anything an amateur would need. I'd say you're pretty much only limited to your own skills with blender. You aren't making a multi million dollar game or fx for a movie so I'd say maya would be completely unnecessary
