New Computer!

Well, I'm buying a new PC.
Here's ehat I've been thinking of:

- Intel core i7 920 CPU
- Gainward GeForce GTX 260 "Goldne sample" graphic card
- gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R motherboard
- Mushkin PC3-12800 Extreme kit 3GB RAM kit, 1600MHz DDR3
- Western Digital WD10EADS Caviar Green HDD (1TB, 7200RPM, 32MB)
- Mushkin XP-800AP Extreme Performance 800W PSU
- NEC AD-1230S Labelflash optical unit
- Antec Three Hundred case

Everything together costs a round 1000.6#8364; (The CPU, The Motherboard and the Graphic card are like 2/3 of the price...)

I will be using it for some gaming, movies, Nolimits, basically everything...

So, what are your opinions, should i change something?

800W is more than enough. 500 will do fine.

Everything looks good and suits each other right.

600 - 700 watt should be sufficient, but for any upgrades the extra gap is always appreciated.

It depends on what Operating System you're gonna run, but maybe looking at 3x 2gb is handier. The costs for memory is so low the last years the extra when running 64 bit is certainly better.

I'm probably going to be running Vista 32bit, untill the final version of Windows 7 comes out. Than I'll see. 32bit Vista doesn't use more than 3GB of ram anyway, so, I'm not going to buy more just now, but if i ever run a 64bit version, I will probably buy more...
Plus, in a couple of months, the DDR3 RAM will probably be much cheaper, and I'll be able to afford more...

OK, then you're right choosing a 3gb kit for 32bit. You can always add some extra later.

And in Windows 7 you find that it's running way faster than Vista even without the change in memory amount.

(difference here between 3gb and 6gb kit is only 20-30 euros)

I have a i7 920 and a GTX275 and they run fine on a 650 watt PSU. I think I read somewhere that the i7s take advantage of 6GB RAM more than 3GB.

I was thinking about getting a new tower to hook up with my telly in my room, because I was tired of having to sit in the boring study when I want to use NL. But I've just this second ordered a new laptop instead, it will be good enough to run it well, but not amazingly, like the beast of a computer in the study But it will break me away from the monotony of that drab-ass room!

For Gaming your much better off buying an AM3 system with a more powerful graphics card and more memory. Its a much better price performance ratio since gaming is more GPU bound than anything and you can do better than a GTX260 and still spend less. For Large Monitors if your getting a new one, you can't beat the 2408wfp or the 2709w for the price.

Gaming is not going to be the only, not even the most important thing for me on this computer.
Also I prefer Intel over AMD, and with the army of new CPUs coming, which use this socket, I'm speculating, that Intel will not abandon it, so I'll be able to upgrade the CPU if I would need to in the future...

About the graphic card...
Yes, I have been thinking about buying something else, but this one turned out to be cheaper than most, at only like 170#8364;. But still, the performance should be great!

Sorry for the double post, but I ran into a problem...
After examining tons of reviews, how to's and stuff, I discovered, that the i7 only support, RAM voltage up to 1.65V...
Now I'm not sure whether to buy The RAM above, becouse it has exactly 1.65V, and I might consider overclocking the CPU in the future...
Sure i could overclock a little, but for something more drastic I would need to make the voltage higher, right?
I'm not really sure about this stuff, since I've never done it before.
How does overclocking generally work with i7 CPUs?

Overclocking i7s seem a little "funky" with me. You have to watch all the voltages all the time. Go with 1600MHz RAM if you want to overclock.

EDIT: Gouldy, that's quite a laptop you got there! I wouldn't recommend buying one, unless you're going to really carry it around tho... As you probably know, you can get a much much better PC for the same price!

if you got money 900$-->you got a intel quad core EXTREME-->realy strong (the procesor cost 900$)

NEVER buy from Alienware... Nearly everything they sell is double the price if you bought from somewhere else.

Example: In the laptop ^ you are paying an additional $900 over the standard CPU selected. If you fiddle with settings on there page you will see they are charging around $350 for the stock selection.
That standard CPU on Newegg is being sold for $219.
That QX9300 CPU on Seven Technologies is being sold for $311.79
Essentially, Alienware wants you to pay $1250.00 when it is only worth $530.79

If you're going with 6GB of RAM, you'll want to run 64-bit from the start. Otherwise you're just wasting money, because 32-bit systems can only use up to 4GB.

Also, I second the AM3 choice over an Intel setup. You can get a Phenom II X4 Deneb @ 3.2gHz with an unlocked multiplier for less than an i7 920. In terms of gaming, right now a Radeon HD 4890 is pretty much the same price as the GTX 260 and outperforms it considerably.

I wouldn't go with the Caviar Green 1TB, as it isn't really meant for performance in any way, shape, or form. The 1TB caviar black is a much better choice.

Vid, either set should work just fine. You just gotta be careful with the voltages when you over clock. I went too high before and it didn't boot. 3.5GHz is more than enough for me. Oh, and don't use the stock cooler just buy a better one.

Im running a I7 920 at around 3.5Ghz without any problems. That's faster than the 965 when not overclocked.



My GPU is a Leadtek Winfast PX9800GX2 model. Very fast, very cheap (now) but also very loud and hot when brought to it's limits.

I run Vista 64.

Yeah, originally, I was going to just build myself another tower to hook up to my tv in my room, because I just don't want to do NL in the study anymore becuase it's depressing . But I decided for the laptop in the end because I can take it to college and work and if I go round the in-laws house or anywhere infact, I can just continue to NL it up!

No doubt the tower I could have constructed for the same money would have been FAR better, but then again, I would have still be restricted to my room!
