Does anyone know what is going down over at the NLDC?

When you log on to the site now, at the top of the page is this statement:

"The NLDC will be closing on July 24th, 2009. We're sorry for the inconvenience.
If you have media stored on this site which you wish to save please do so before then."

So yeah, anyone know what this is about and if it really is closing or just a temporary thing?

Actually, Riscit was going to close it down before Coastersims went down. He couldn't find a way to make any money from it.

He couldn't find a way to make any money from it.

Not sure where you got that from. It's both false and irrelivant to the motivation.

NLDC costs virtually nothing to run. It's minor expenses are covered by pocket change, and my time and the time of the various site admins. The few google ads more than covered the domain name expenses, which was the only real expense.

I decided long ago that I did not wish to continue maintaining the back end and dealing with user support issues, spam attacks, and people using the site as a general image host rather than NoLimits project presentations as intended. Last night I set a date to close it.

It is what it is. There's no need to assume there is some wierd greed related motivation. Selfish with my time and energy, perphaps, but not monitary greed.

Site content will be archived, but not publically accessible.

The site will not be handed over to a new owner or host due to obvious data privacy concerns.

There's a possibility that it may re-open in the future, but probably not until after a new NL release, should it ever come to pass.

Unfortunate RiscIt. I was going to email you and ask you just simply what brought this on. Itll be missed. It was one of the real assets to the communities.

It is a shame to see it go Phil, was always a good place for projects to be showcased.
Hopefully when NL2 is released you blow of the dust and reinstate the NLDC.
Time will tell.

Well, I deleted all my stuff on there, I don't need my credible stuff not being accessible, if it's not accessible to me, it sure as hell won't be to anyone else being archived, without me being able to access it - no way!

You guys doing this as well?

R.I.P to a great project showcasing site.
"Don't be a disability"... yep, still keeping that. :P

While I appreciate NLDC's existence...its not that hard to host your photos elsewhere.

This sort of sucks. Does anyone know of another site made for the sole purpose of showcasing NL projects?
But to Riscit, the site will be missed, and we appreciate all the time and effort you put into while it was open.

^^That is true. But NLDC made it very organized and easily accessible to all pictures of a project, and all projects of a designer (along with a place to see all future designs that a designer plans on releasing).

You know what this means Oscar. You're gonna have to make the CC NoLimits DevCenter! [lol]

Flickr would be a good alternative for most people. $15 a year for unlimited use and very similar in how organized/structured it is.

I did like the NLDC as I liked looking through other people's projects, so I will miss that part, but as Jakizle said it's relatively easy to find other hosting. Thank you Riscit for running it, it was definitely helpful to a lot of people.

^100% agreed with that post. Flickr works great because you can just make a set for each coaster and put all of the pictures in that set...pretty much the same thing, just with better quality. We could also make a NoLimits group or something like that to find everyone's projects.

??? Use the hard hat forum and attach pictures to the forum. That's it. Future designs? Uhmmm make a post stating your future plans for a design. Not sure why I have to do something different if what's there works for that.
