Big dipper crash - 20 injured

More than 30 people have been injured in a crash involving two rollercoaster cars at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

Two cars on the famous Big Dipper crashed and came to rest 20ft (6m) off the ground at about 1945 BST.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said about 32 "walking wounded" were taken to hospital by ambulance.

A specialist rope team was brought in to help get people off the ride, with stretchers and spinal boards used for the injured.

A number of passengers on the ride suffered whiplash, broken bones and back injuries.

The Big Dipper, a wooden rollercoaster, opened in 1923.

Do remeber, this thing was built in 23, that's almost 100 years ago

Dude, it's a 1920's roller coaster, they didn't even have computers back then! modern coasters are 100x safer.

I thought big dipper was a two train operation, send the next train when the first arrives back at the station.

carnt tear it down, its a registered landmark along with the roller coaster, the mad mouse, grand national, the haunted swing, the ghost train, the gold mine and river caves. all registered and underlaw cannot be torn down. its only just had new trains and its time for a revanp like the grand national had so that is what will happen.

I understand their listed nature, but if they are not safe, which recent evidence would suggest they are not, they should be closed and either brought up to modern wooden coaster safety standards, or just torn out completely.

If a listed building or "landmark" is deemed to be unsafe for whatever reason, it is still liable to be torn down, despite it's listed status. Well, actually, that's not entirely true, it depends whether it's grade 2 listed or blah-di-blah etc.

Um, just because of the stuff you said doesnt mean it cant be torn down by either the proper authorities or by the ones who filed its trademarks anyways.

ok, when was the last time any of the wooden coaster had an accident befor this? they are perfectly safe as i see and yes they need some updates but i truly belive these will not be torn down over 1 minor accident and this must of been minor as no body was killed or seriouly injured. look at the big one, thats killed 7 people but over 10 years on and its still running.

and its not just listed its marked as a national treasure by the authoritys so they can close it but not demolish it. its all goverment crap and laws on top of laws but i have asked this of the BPB's top staff befor in a walk around.

Does anybody here know what really happened? Terms are sometimes interchanged and even used erroneously. Was this a case in which 2 trains collided? Or was it that 2 cars within a train somehow uncoupled and crashed into each other? Both have happened within my memory on various coasters - more often than not, though, it's that 2 trains collide. They should never be within the same block, and sometimes too much reliance is placed on computer systems. I know of one coaster that had a computer system and a redundant (backup) system) and it still allowed the trains to crash. I think the best world has a computer system that can be overidden by an operator who is paying attention. But I am curious as to what happened in Blackpool. Thanks.

Anyway any moving object has a chance of damaging something. Thats basic knowledge. However you are about 100 times more likely to wreck on your way to the park then you are on the ride itself. Coasters are extremely safe and one accident, especially a minor one such as this, is no big deal really. Make sure everyone is alright, give them free admission for their trouble, fix the trains, inspect the ride, ungrade if nessary and then re open. Not really a big deal.

i highly doubt it'll be open in 10 days.
then again, i highly doubt they will get rid of it, it'll probs just get a refurb.

If they can't tear it down then burn it down.

From what i've heard was that this rollercoaster still operates manually and from the rumors, that i've heard, is that the operator didn't notice a train stalling and that it did dispatch a train.
But yeah. That's just some rumors i've heard, I'm not sure if it's true.

Actually, with the amount of general scum living in that area, it is a huge surprise that none of the wooden coasters haven't already been burnt down! Bloody chavs, we all know what happened to Scenic Railway.

and there have been alot of suspicious fire's in the bars in blackpool lately, and dont forget the grand national was torched 2 tmes in what was suspected as arson, but the big dipper is right in the venter of the park so i dought they would get there befor they got caught.

yes its manually operated still with a few alterations but they will have to update now wont they
