I know this may be a bit of a n00b question. Don't just reply telling me I'm a n00b for asking this.

What method should I use to build a good tophat in No Limits?

Handbuilding with AHG afterwards?

Elementary?

Newton? (If so, please tell me how to make a tophat in Newton, because whenever I make one, it sucks.)

No, you are not a noob just for asking this. (hand) it is a hard process to learn, but if you get it down, it is very useful. (AHG) For me it takes a couple of times to get it right.
I personally try to hand build it, but I use AHG for it sometimes.

The person to ask for this is real. He knows a lot about tophats

Actually Real taught me the basics, and I have effectively built many great top hats. The best method to build one is using HSAK, Purgatorium, and AHG. It's a very difficult process because shaping is crucial on a top hat. You don't want the top to be too round, or too sharp, causing good or bad G's, and/or rollbacks. There also very tough because you must control the G's. I have had it where I have had a 4.8 G pull up, but then going over the top it either spiked something like -1.7 Vert G's, or it just rolled back. Top hats are elements that you must tweak and tweak and tweak to get just right.
So, my friend came up to me the other day and asked if I wanted a frozen banana, and I said no, but I want a normal banana later, so... yea.

Here's a summary Real:
You have become an iProduct. No matter what you did or didn't do, people like it.

Notice the lack of a homosexual overtones joke. I let it slide this time because it would be unsporting of me.

Well, thats lame. I hate iProducts. I gave away my iPod so I could get a Zune...much better choice.

Well, guess Ill have to resort to producing lame, crappy products with attractive packaging all preceded by intense and predictable marketing campaigns all culminating in yet another instant hit that will be seen to be overpriced and overhyped in under a year.

Ill just produce my own stuff. But thanks for the insight ther CKW. I think you're on to something with that.

Thats strange, taking into account your homosexual ways.

ANYWAYS, getting back to the OP's post:

AHG as well as elementary/newton really hate vertical lines, which is why it looks jacked up when you make something vertical. Theoreticaly, you can make one on it's side, AHG, then rotate it vertically using Purgatorium, but I've not found it to work very well.

The best method I've had success with is hand building. Made one pretty smooth about a year ago, bankings and all.

Just make one at 89.5 degrees in HSAK (it only takes 2 elements), rotate it in the PURG, then color the top black and AHG with a high filter.

Wouldn't the vertical spirals need to be heartlined though?

Thanks everyone for the help.

I'm not kissing anybody's ass, I am just simply stating the fact that Real taught me the basics of a top hat.

And to somewhat follow up on what Jakizle said, that's more or less the idea. You want to take your elements and rotate them in purg, and if you want a potentially smoother and more realistic twist, I would hand bank them. Color the whole thing black (if you hand banked), throw it into AHG, and make the filter rediculously high. Last time I made one, the filter was something around 3500 to 4000. Voila.
So, my friend came up to me the other day and asked if I wanted a frozen banana, and I said no, but I want a normal banana later, so... yea.

Yes, but hand heartlining isn't too difficult.

If you just color the top black it will bank it for you in AHG just fine with a filter ~ 1500

I never use filters higher than 255 when color coding. You guys actually do individual segments with filters that high? holy crap, it must not turn out at all like the original thing.
