Albeit weird, its completely necessary. They didnt go with the tradition rail design because it would have snapped. When you have a ride with that many g-forces, coming from a 300+ foot drop, and having nothing but high-speed, low to the ground turns.

you need strong track. When a train traves over the track, the rails push down and out. Thats why Intamin went with the straight triangle design and didnt put any cross-bars in the track. They put the second rail in there so the track wouldnt snap in places where it wasnt supported.
