I am to believe that .DOCX is computer speak for a file that's been saved in Microsoft Word 2007. I'm at work, and have been sent a 2007 document, we have Word 2003 and obviously it doesn't want to open a 2007 document.

Anyone know the easiest way to get this file to open? Somewhere I can use the net to open it up? Any suggestions at all? It might be something simple and glaringly obvious but I'm not a computer wiz! [lol]

I'm assuming Open Office will be of help in converting the file? But I can't really download anything on this computer so downloading a copy of Open Office might be a bit of a bugger.

You can install a plugin for 2003 that opens docx, i believe microsoft calls it compatibility mode or something.
Also, you can ask the sender to use "save as" and then ".doc"

Yeah, I figured about her saving it as a pervious version of Word, but emailing her back at this stage isn't really possible, so I have to work with what I've got, which is Word 2003 and a Word 2007 file [lol]. I'm looking for the plugin now, cheers hyyyper.

EDIT: Downloaded the Windows Compatability Pack thing, it's worked pretty much, just some of the formatting has disappeared, but all the images and texts are there.

Cheers again!

I HATE OFFICE 2007! Why rearrange everything backasswards and switch the font just as I figure out the program?

yeah, 2007 is horrid. Everything to do with Microsoft Equation, which I use a lot of college work, is completely retarded and everything is done the hard way instead of it being easy and obvious like it has been on previous versions.

^That's why I write up anything even remotely technical (with either equations or a bib) in LaTeX. Even OpenOffice has some serious trouble cracking that lovely *.docx format.

I left work about 4 hours ago, kids [lol]. I appreciate the help, but hyyyper's assistance was good enough. I typed "Windows compatability docx" into google and that was the end of that chapter! Well it wasn't... because then I had to actually do the work that I needed to do, all this was just to open the file
