These pictures of damage are just a few blocks from my house. Luckily my house escaped any damage. The pictures are truly amazing, and I encourage you to check them out.

And 75% of that damage is entirely the people who live there's fault. I do not feel sorry for any of the idiots who put themselves in harms way on purpose "for a view" or whatever.

^It may be awful, but the residents were no doubt aware of the risk. It's like when people who live in the Californian chaparral lose their homes to a fire; ones sympathy rarely extends beyond saying, "well, tough luck."

OK, so I guess that means that people who live along beaches are idiots for living where hurricanes strike, or maybe idiots who live near volcanoes are also idiots. Oh! I got one for you! How about all those people who live along faults? I guess they are all morons too. How about half of Floridians? I'm sure people who have a house sitting on top of the aquifer are idiots because of sinkholes.
Oh, were you expecting something here?

The degree of risk is significantly less with hurricanes, volcanoes, and earthquake zones. Houses are engineered to withstand most earthquakes (unless missionaries design them with no engineering principles whatsoever because jesus will protect them, see Haiti for a great example of this), and people evacuate when a volcano is about to erupt or a hurricane is about to make landfall. The karst topography in Florida and other regions is a whole different subject I'm not going to get into since you're comparing apples to oranges.

Living in an area that will inevitably slide downhill due to the development of housing is asking for it. It is not a question of will it, it's when will it. The hills area he lives in in California are consistently used as the stupidest place to build anything in multiple textbooks. The housing developments compound existing problems by several magnitudes in those areas around California. Quite honestly the only dumber construction I've ever seen is Haiti's decision to build their capital city with no earthquake proofing over the gigantic fault that runs through Haiti or the dam in Iraq that is built over gypsum (mineral that is water soluble).

It sucks that these people are losing their homes, but they shouldn't construct a 700K+ house in an area that will inevitably go downhill and make the impending landslide even worse.

So please try not to demonize me for calling people stupid for doing the equivalent of calling people who don't evacuate when they have the means to evacuate when a hurricane is about hit a bunch of morons. Thanks.

I wouldn't (and haven't) call them idiots. Do not misrepresent my point, but suffice it to say I would not consider living in any place with a significant risk of natural destruction. Of course, I'm currently in the Midwest, where the greatest dangers are tornadoes and the reawakening of New Madrid.

This is why I live in England, where nothing of any significance will ever happen, ever.
